Job Description

A welder at McWane Plant & Industrial, Exeter, CA is responsible for assembling, repairing, and joining metal components using various welding techniques while ensuring safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings to understand product specifications and measurements.
  • Measuring, cutting, and shaping metal components using hand tools, plasma cutters, or metal cutting machines.
  • Performing welding operations using MIG, TIG, Stick, and arc welding techniques.
  • Setting up, maintaining, and operating welding equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Obtaining specified electrode and inserting it into a portable holder or threading consumable electrode wire through a portable welding gun.
  • Connecting cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse as specified by Welding Engineer or Welding Technician.
  • Generating and controlling the arc to melt and deposit metal from electrode to workpiece and join edges of the workpiece.
  • Manually guiding electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining arc length and speed to form specified depth of fusion and bead.
  • Welding in flat, horizontal, vertical or overhead positions.
  • Examining weld for bead size, quality, and other specifications.
  • Applying filler rod manually to supply weld metal.
  • Cleansing or degreasing weld joint or workpiece.
  • Repairing broken or cracked parts, filling holes, and preparing broken parts for welding by grooving or scarring surfaces.
  • Removing excess weld, slag, and spatter.
  • Preheating workpiece with hand torch or heating furnace.
  • Positioning and clamping workpieces together or assembling them in a jig or fixture.
  • Tacking assemblies together.
  • Performing other related duties as needed to meet project or organizational requirements.

Education & Experience

High school diploma or equivalent; vocational or technical training in welding is highly preferred. Continuous education and certification renewal are often required to keep up with evolving welding technologies and methods.

Certification, Licenses, Registrations: Professional credentials from recognized organizations such as the American Welding Society (AWS), including Certified Welder (CW) status.

Skills & Abilities

  • Hands‑on welding experience through previous jobs or apprenticeships; familiarity with different metals and welding techniques.
  • Working knowledge of MIG welding equipment.
  • Able to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Effective presentation of information in one‑on‑one and small group settings.
  • Basic mathematics: calculate ratios and percentages using decimals.
  • Common sense reasoning to carry out detailed instructions and solve problems involving a few variables.

Physical Demands

The employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Occasionally required to climb or balance and talk or hear. Must frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close, peripheral, and depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The work environment includes exposure to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold and heat, vibration, and moderate to loud noise. Safety gear such as gloves, masks, and protective clothing is mandatory.

Compensation

Hourly Pay Rate: $20–$21
