Job Description:

The Probation Services Officer (PSO) role is part of the Probation Service’s core work of managing people on probation before and after sentence. The PSO will work with a range of offenders, assess and manage risk, provide support and produce accurate reports. The position is based in the UK and is open to all candidates who meet the civil service right‑to‑work requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of offenders before and after sentence, assessing risk and supporting rehabilitation.
  • Prepare accurate and timely accounts and reports for courts and other stakeholders.
  • Provide case management support by following service procedures and professional judgement.
  • Collaborate with courts, police and other agencies across the justice system.
  • Implement sentencing decisions and monitor compliance with probation orders.
  • Support offenders with practical advice on housing, employment and daily living.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • No degree is required; relevant experience working with individuals facing social or personal difficulties is valued.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear reports to tight deadlines.
  • Resilience, empathy, patience and organisational skills to manage challenging situations.
  • Experience or knowledge of probation practices, risk assessment, or related fields is highly desirable.

Salary and Benefits

  • Starting salary of £28,064 (subject to departmental banding).
  • Annual leave 25 days, increasing to 30 days after five years of service.
