Job Description:

Syndicate Underwriting Manager – Lloyd’s Managing Agency – London

I’m working with a Lloyd’s Managing Agency who are looking to appoint a Syndicate Underwriting Manager into their Underwriting Management team.

This is a really interesting opportunity for someone with a strong technical underwriting background who enjoys being close to syndicate strategy, portfolio performance and business planning.

The client is keen to find someone who can act as a genuine technical underwriting partner to the syndicates they support – someone who can understand the detail quickly, keep pace with Active Underwriters and senior underwriting teams, and provide sensible, commercially aware challenge and advice.

This isn’t a role for someone who wants to sit at arm’s length and review things from a distance. It needs someone who can represent the Managing Agency credibly, understand what a syndicate is trying to achieve, and help shape the conversation around underwriting performance, SBFs, portfolio movement, deviations from plan and future strategy.

You’ll be working closely with the Deputy Director of Underwriting and senior underwriting leadership across a portfolio of managed syndicates, with involvement across:

  • Supporting syndicates with business planning and SBF submissions
  • Reviewing underwriting performance against agreed plans
  • Interpreting monthly and quarterly underwriting MI
  • Advising on deviations from plan and appropriate corrective actions
  • Supporting mid‑year changes and recommendations
  • Representing underwriting matters at committee level
  • Working closely with Active Underwriters, underwriting teams and internal functions
  • Helping onboard new syndicates into the Managing Agency platform

The ideal person will have a strong Lloyd’s underwriting background and the technical credibility to hold meaningful conversations with senior underwriting stakeholders.

You don’t necessarily need to have come from a pure governance or controls role. In fact, this may suit someone who has been close to underwriting performance, portfolio management, business planning, class strategy or underwriting management, and now wants a broader role across multiple syndicates.

A specialty lines background would be particularly desirable, given the nature of the syndicates being supported.

You’ll need to be analytical, commercially minded and comfortable interrogating underwriting data, but the key requirement is the ability to understand underwriting in enough depth to advise, challenge and represent the Managing Agency properly.

This would suit someone who enjoys the technical side of underwriting, likes working with senior market professionals, and wants to be involved in how syndicates are performing, planning and developing over time.

The role comes with a competitive salary, discretionary bonus & a 3/2 split hybrid working policy.

Happy to speak confidentially if this sounds of interest, or if you know someone in the Lloyd’s market who would be well suited.
