We’re recruiting on behalf of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council for an experienced Environmental Health Officer to join the Facilities & Environment team. This is an excellent opportunity to work across a varied portfolio of environmental health functions while gaining valuable experience within a progressive local authority.
Based at the Kilkeel Office, you’ll enjoy a blend of office, site and hybrid working, giving you the opportunity to work across one of Northern Ireland’s most diverse council areas.
About the Role
Reporting to the Senior Environmental Health Officer, you’ll be responsible for delivering a professional Environmental Health service, ensuring compliance with legislation while protecting public health and the environment.
This varied role will see you working across areas including:
- Environmental Protection
- Public Health
- Food Safety
- Health & Safety
- Consumer Protection
- Housing
- Planning Consultations
- Enforcement of relevant legislation and by-laws
You’ll carry out inspections, investigations and enforcement activities, provide professional advice to businesses and stakeholders, and contribute to projects that support the health and wellbeing of local communities.
Key Responsibilities
As Environmental Health Officer, you will:
- Conduct inspections, investigations and compliance visits across a range of Environmental Health disciplines.
- Investigate complaints and respond to service requests within agreed timescales.
- Undertake environmental sampling programmes, analyse results and determine appropriate action.
- Assess planning and building control applications, providing specialist environmental advice.
- Prepare professional reports, business cases and evidence for legal proceedings where required.
- Liaise with businesses, contractors, elected members and external agencies to ensure compliance with environmental legislation.
- Support Environmental Health projects and service improvement initiatives.
- Assist with emergency response and business continuity activities when required.
- Deliver advice, training and health education initiatives to internal and external stakeholders
