Quantity Surveyor – Surrey – Hybrid

The role

As a Quantity Surveyor, you will play a key role in the commercial success of projects across Transport, Water, Energy, and Defence., ensuring robust cost management, contractual compliance, and value optimisation at every stage. You will work as part of an integrated, collaborative delivery team, supporting project performance while building strong relationships with both internal stakeholders and external partners.

This role offers the opportunity to work independently on key commercial activities while also being supported by senior commercial professionals, providing an excellent environment for development and progression.

Key Responsibilities

You will be responsible for supporting the effective commercial management of projects, including:

Commercial & Contract Management

  • Ensuring all contractual obligations are met, with accurate and timely issuance of required notices, correspondence, and documentation in line with contract conditions
  • Drafting contractual communications on behalf of the Project Manager and ensuring compliance with company procedures and client expectations
  • Supporting the administration and management of various contract forms, ensuring adherence to commercial governance frameworks

Cost Management & Reporting

  • Preparation and assessment of interim applications for payment, valuations, and payment certificates
  • Producing detailed cost/value reconciliations to monitor financial performance
  • Supporting the development of accurate cost forecasts and budgets
  • Contributing to monthly commercial reporting, including:
  • Cost and value analysis
  • Profit & loss tracking
  • Cash flow forecasting

Risk & Value Optimisation

  • Assisting in risk identification, mitigation, and opportunity management to maximise project value
  • Supporting structured risk and value management processes, regularly reviewing with the project team
  • Proactively identifying commercial risks and developing appropriate responses

Supply Chain Management

  • Preparing and issuing supply chain enquiries in line with procurement strategies
  • Supporting negotiation, placement, and administration of subcontract agreements
  • Managing subcontractor accounts, including variations, valuations, and final accounts
  • Ensuring timely close-out of supply chain contracts

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Working closely with site teams, project managers, and commercial colleagues to ensure alignment on project delivery
  • Maintaining ongoing communication with subcontractors and client representatives
  • Contributing to a collaborative and high-performing integrated delivery team environment

Compliance & Governance

  • Ensuring all documentation and commercial processes comply with contractual, company, and client requirements
  • Supporting robust document control processes and maintaining accurate records
  • Escalating any commercial, health & safety, or environmental risks to the Contract Leader or Project Manager

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Strong commercial awareness with the ability to interpret financial data and drive value
  • A logical, methodical approach to problem solving with strong attention to detail
  • Experience in preparing financial reports, payment applications, and contractual documentation
  • Experience across one or more of the following sectors: Transport, Water, Energy, or Defence
  • Proven ability to work within structured commercial systems, including document control and reporting procedures
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships
  • Demonstrable understanding of construction contracts, commercial processes, and legal frameworks
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a wider team

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline (RICS/CICES accredited), or
  • Currently working towards an accredited postgraduate qualification with a minimum of 5 years’ relevant industry experience
