Software Engineer (Consultant Level) — Java / Kafka / Microservices
We’re working with a globally recognised fintech business on four Software Consultant hires into their cross-border payments engineering team. This is a well‑funded, high‑calibre team with a genuine start‑up culture (fast‑moving, technically rigorous and serious about the quality of their engineers).
The role
You’ll join one of three cross‑functional squads working on a payments integration platform that processes transactions across borders at scale. The team is small enough that your contributions are visible, but backed by the resources and infrastructure of a global business. Roughly 60–75% of your time is hands‑on coding; the rest is design, review, and collaboration with product and data.

Tech
- Java (primary language — must be strong) (5–7+ years)
- Kafka / event‑driven architecture
- Microservices
- AWS
- TDD is valued; payments or fintech background is a plus
What you’ll be doing
- Designing and building production‑grade backend services on a cross‑border payments platform
- Contributing to system design, code reviews, and technical decision‑making
- Working in a CI/CD environment with high engineering standards
- Using AI‑assisted tooling (Claude, Copilot, etc.) as part of everyday development
What we’re looking for
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, with strong Java in production
- Solid grasp of event‑driven architecture and distributed systems
- Able to commute to London three days a week (Tue/Wed/Thu)
