Sole Payroll Manager

Key Details

  • Location: Surrey
  • Position: 0.5 FTE (Permanent Part‑time)
  • Start date: Dependent on notice period
  • Salary (FTE): £35,000
  • DBS: Enhanced DBS to be taken out by the organisation
  • Hours will be split over the month, agreed upon with the Line Manager

Duties

  • Process the end‑to‑end payroll function independently, ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and compliance.
  • Manage one monthly payroll run for approximately 70 permanent employees and 30 contract staff, finalising and processing payroll by the 28th of each month.
  • Act as the main point of contact for all pension‑related matters, liaising with the pension provider People’s Partnership to resolve queries and ensure accurate contributions and reporting.
  • Accurately input and maintain all payroll data in the system, including variable payments and deductions such as overtime, working hours, National Minimum Wage / National Living Wage calculations, SSP, SPP, SMP, court orders, and other statutory payments.
  • Maintain and update employee payroll records, ensuring all personal details, salary amendments, and contractual changes are processed accurately and timely.
  • Provide payroll expertise and advisory support to employees and clients, resolving complex payroll queries efficiently and delivering high‑standard customer service.
  • Ensure full compliance with payroll legislation, HMRC requirements, and reporting obligations, maintaining accurate records and meeting statutory deadlines.
  • Perform all routine payroll administration duties to support accurate payroll processing, compliance, and timely delivery of employee payments each month.

Experience Required

  • Sage Payroll system – Essential
  • Background working in Higher Education – Desirable
  • Experience running end‑to‑end payroll in a sole capacity – Essential

Working Hours

  • Flexible working; a set pattern across the month will be agreed with the Line Manager.
  • Monday to Friday (flexible hours)
