Generator Controls Engineer

Location: Rochester, Kent (on-site). Salary: £50,000-£70,000.

Overview

We are partnering with a well-established generator manufacturing and power solutions business looking for a Generator Controls Engineer to join their growing engineering team. This role focuses on end-to-end system design, from development through to commissioning, within a highly technical and hands‑on environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop generator control systems, including PLC programming and HMI interfaces
  • Configure and troubleshoot control panels, sensors, and associated electrical components
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional engineering teams to deliver integrated system solutions
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation such as schematics and test procedures
  • Conduct system testing, validation, and commissioning activities
  • Diagnose and resolve control system and generator performance issues
  • Support field service teams with technical expertise and troubleshooting
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of system performance and reliability

Experience Required

  • Proven experience in control systems engineering within industrial or power generation environments
  • Strong PLC programming experience (e.g., Allen‑Bradley, Siemens)
  • Experience with HMI/SCADA systems and industrial communication protocols (Modbus, CANbus, Ethernet/IP)
  • Strong understanding of electrical schematics and control panel design
  • Experience with system testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting
  • Excellent problem‑solving and analytical skills
  • Strong communication skills with both technical and non‑technical teams
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative engineering team

Bonus Skills

  • Generator paralleling systems, load‑sharing controls
  • NFPA/NEC/UL standards, field commissioning experience
