JOB DESCRIPTION

CLEANING SUPERVISOR

Responsible to: Designated line manager

Responsible for: Supervision of cleaning staff at a specified location

Job Purpose

Provide a cleaning service within a building or building complex to agreed standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, organise and control work of cleaning staff to ensure EA standards are met; cleaning supervisor personally undertakes cleaning duties.
  • Carry out induction and skills training including refresher training in line with EA practice.
  • Liaise with building manager or authorised person on day‑to‑day cleaning issues.
  • Investigate complaints, take corrective action and advise designated line manager where appropriate.
  • Ensure adequate supplies of materials and light equipment are requisitioned, maintained within the budget, and equipment kept in good condition, used and stored correctly.
  • Monitor suitability and performance of materials and light equipment and advise line manager of any inappropriate items.
  • Recommend and implement changes in work procedures to improve economy, standards or ease of operation.
  • Maintain cleaning standards within premises to meet EA standards.
  • Allocate keys to cleaning staff and ensure return at end of each day.
  • Plan periodic work in consultation with service users and report plans to Area Co‑ordinator in advance of school closures.
  • Ensure all records for staff attendance, holidays, and absences are completed, authorised and returned to EA promptly.
  • Maintain records of consumable stocks and inventory of equipment.

General Conditions

  • All duties must comply with the Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978.

  • Carry out duties in normal working conditions inherent to the job.
  • Cover colleagues on sick leave in line with EA procedure.
  • Report absences in line with EA’s Procedure and complete relevant forms signed by Building Supervisor.
  • Wear protective clothing or issued workwear when carrying out cleaning duties.
  • Wear flat‑soled enclosed‑toe footwear when carrying out cleaning duties.
  • Use and care for issued cleaning equipment safely; report defects immediately.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork.
  • Perform duties within competence of employee, in jobs of same grade or higher only if trained.

Training

  • Accept training for jobs graded above own level where required by authority and use only when necessary.
  • Accept training to facilitate duties up to and including own grade; includes induction and refresher training.

Essential Criteria

  • Demonstrable two years’ experience of cleaning outside the home environment.
  • Ability to use own initiative and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, including speaking and writing in English.
  • Effective organisation and planning skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Flexible approach to work and ability to give instruction.
  • Knowledge of cleaning supervisor responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety at Work NI Order 1978.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and machinery.
  • Evidence of alignment with EA’s values and ethos.

Desirable Criteria

  • Demonstrable experience of supervising staff.
  • Commitment to equality and excellence in service delivery.

Disclosure of Criminal Background

Applicants for posts involving regulated activity must undergo an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background, as required by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007. The applicant will be responsible for the related costs; details will be provided during pre‑employment.
