Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a pharmacist with a passion for working within elderly care to join our clinical pharmacy team at University Hospitals Sussex as the lead pharmacist for Elderly Care at Worthing and St Richards Hospital. The successful candidate will be engaged in actively reviewing patients across our elderly care wards alongside our junior pharmacist team and will have close contact with the MDT to provide excellent standards of care. We seek a clinically experienced pharmacist with a passion to develop their skills in this area. As a senior member of the pharmacy team, you will be an integral part of the department and help support and promote our pharmacy and clinical strategies.

We are a department that seeks to be a pioneer with the use of technology with electronic prescribing present on all our elderly care wards.

You will have delegated responsibility for all our elderly care wards and supervision of the team within your rotations. We are committed to providing opportunities for you to develop your clinical and management skills. The Trust holds research as one of its key pillars you will have the opportunity to be involved with and develop skills in this area.

Main duties of the job

  • To have delegated responsibility for leading the provision of a specialist clinical pharmacy service to elderly care patients; admissions, inpatients and discharges within the Trust.
  • Will provide an expert level of clinical pharmacy services to elderly care (including acute frailty if required) across Worthing and St Richards Hospitals as part of UHSussex NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Will lead specialist clinical pharmacy practice for acute frailty and elderly care and be responsible for the delivery, development, evaluation and co-ordination of clinical pharmacy services to Elderly Care in line with the objectives of the division and the UHSussex pharmacy strategy in collaboration with any cross site counterparts.
  • Is responsible for all aspects of medicines management to optimise patient’s care involving the use of medication in elderly care.

Person specification

Professional Registration

  • Registered Member of the GPhC
  • Member of the UKCPA or other specialist interest group
  • RPS Faculty membership or working towards

Experience

  • Further post‑graduate qualification in clinical pharmacy at PG diploma level or sufficient experience gained in practice to equate to this level of training
  • Independent prescriber
  • PG leadership or management qualification

Skills

  • Significant experience in clinical hospital pharmacy in a broad range of specialties
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience in working in an MDT
  • Experience of planning and reporting service audits
  • Working as a specialist pharmacist within elderly care

People Management and Development

  • General teaching and tutoring experience
  • Staff Management Experience
  • Explicit experience with being a DS for a trainee pharmacist
  • Explicit experience with being a ES for a foundation pharmacist
