City Wide

Salary: £35,022 – £52,740

Hours: 35 per week

About the Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed specialist to join our Primary Curricular Swimming Team for the 2026/27 academic session. This is a full‑time fixed‑term position, and applications are welcomed from both Physical Education Teachers and Primary Teachers who hold a recognised swimming teaching or coaching qualification.

Applicants will ideally possess an accredited rescue qualification, such as the National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NRASTC). Support can be provided to gain this qualification while in post if required.

This role involves delivering high‑quality swimming lessons as part of an experienced and supportive team. You will work collaboratively with colleagues on some days and teach independently on others. The primary focus is the delivery of curricular swimming to P5 pupils across the city’s primary schools, with opportunities to deliver preparatory lessons to P4 pupils where timetabling permits.

As a peripatetic teacher, you will work across a variety of schools and swimming pools throughout the week and academic year. Flexibility, strong organisational skills, and a commitment to providing excellent learning experiences are essential.

Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to health and safety and be confident working with children of varying abilities and levels of confidence in the water. Lessons are delivered in line with City of Edinburgh Council swimming certificate stages and the Scottish Swimming Framework, with pupil progress monitored and recorded using Pupil Tracker.

Requirements

The preferred candidate will be required to join the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007 (PVG) Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. These checks will be required before an unconditional offer of employment can be made.

Salaries will be in accordance with the Scheme of Salaries and Conditions of Service for Teaching Staff in School Education.

Equality & Diversity

We are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce where everyone feels valued and able to be their best. We particularly encourage applications from women for senior roles, as well as people from minority ethnic backgrounds, people with disabilities or neurodivergent people, care‑experienced people, carers and LGBT+ people across all levels of the organisation, all of whom are currently under‑represented. All applicants will be considered fairly based on skills and experience. Disabled and care‑experienced applicants who meet the minimum job criteria will be guaranteed an interview.
