Role Description
The Assistant Accountant will support senior accountants with day-to-day accounting and bookkeeping activities for a varied client portfolio. Responsibilities include processing invoices and bank transactions, maintaining accurate ledgers, assisting with weekly and monthly payroll, preparing CIS returns, and supporting the preparation of VAT returns and year-end accounts. The role also involves helping with management accounts, responding to client queries, and ensuring records are compliant and up to date. This is a full-time hybrid role based in Luton, with core office work complemented by some work-from-home flexibility. The successful candidate will work closely with the team to deliver timely and accurate financial information to clients.
Qualifications
- Foundational accounting knowledge, with experience in bookkeeping, double-entry accounting, and reconciliations.
- Ability to assist with payroll processing, CIS returns, and basic tax compliance tasks.
- Proficiency with accounting and payroll software (e.g., Sage, Xero, QuickBooks, or similar), and strong MS Excel skills.
- Strong attention to detail, numerical accuracy, and ability to maintain organized financial records.
- Effective communication skills for interacting with clients and colleagues in a clear and professional manner.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize workloads, and meet deadlines in a busy practice environment.
- Relevant accounting qualification or part-qualification (e.g., AAT, ACCA, or similar), or equivalent practical experience.
- Willingness to learn, adapt to changing client needs, and develop within a professional accountancy practice.
