Early Years Inclusion & Support Assistant (SEND & Extended Provision)

Hours: 27.5 per week, Monday-Friday, 7:30am-1:00pm (term time only)

Contract Type: Fixed-term (linked to EHCP funding)

Reports to: Headteacher, Class Teacher, SENCo, Wraparound Care Manager

Liaison with: Teaching staff, support staff, wraparound care team, parents/carers, external professionals

Job Purpose

To provide high-quality, nurturing support for pupils in Early Years, particularly those with complex and significant SEND, enabling them to access learning and develop independence.

To contribute to both extended provision (breakfast club) and the school day, ensuring children experience a safe, consistent and inclusive start to their day.

To work in partnership with teaching staff in delivering the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, supporting learning, development and care in line with statutory requirements and school values.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Support pupils with complex SEND within EYFS, implementing tailored provision and EHCP targets
  • Ensure the safety, welfare and positive development of pupils across both breakfast club and the school day
  • Contribute to an inclusive environment where all children are supported to thrive

Key Duties

Extended Provision (Breakfast Club)

  • Supervise pupils to ensure their safety, wellbeing and good conduct
  • Support children with breakfast routines, including assisting with eating where necessary
  • Prepare and clear food areas, maintaining a clean and organised environment
  • Lead and facilitate play, social interaction and structured activities
  • Provide pastoral care, emotional reassurance and guidance at the start of the day
  • Record and report any incidents (e.g. behaviour, first aid, safeguarding concerns)
  • Liaise with teaching staff regarding pupil wellbeing and transitions into the school day

EYFS SEND Support

  • Work 1:1 and with small groups under the direction of the class teacher and SENCo
  • Implement EHCPs/IEPs and adapt activities to meet individual needs
  • Deliver learning through play-based, sensory and developmentally appropriate approaches aligned to the EYFS framework
  • Support communication, interaction, emotional regulation and physical development
  • Promote inclusion, ensuring access to activities through differentiation and support
  • Assist with personal care, health and welfare needs, including minor first aid
  • Support behaviour positively in line with school policy
  • Encourage independence and participation in routines and learning
  • Observe, monitor and record pupil progress and share feedback with staff
  • Support transitions (e.g. into school, between activities)

General Classroom & School Responsibilities

  • Prepare and organise resources to support learning activities
  • Contribute to displays and the learning environment
  • Support supervision at key times if required (e.g. trips, short periods)
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and external professionals
  • Build positive relationships with parents and carers

General Responsibilities

  • Follow all school policies including safeguarding, behaviour, health & safety and confidentiality
  • Participate in training, meetings and professional development
  • Maintain accurate records where requiredContribute to performance management and continuous improvement
  • Promote equality, inclusion and the values of the school

Person Specification

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience working with children in an early years or school setting
  • Experience supporting children with SEND desirable
  • Relevant qualification (e.g. NVQ Level 2 in Early Years or Learning Support) desirable
  • Knowledge of the EYFS framework desirable

Knowledge & Skills

  • Understanding of child development, particularly within EYFS
  • Ability to support pupils with complex needs (communication, sensory, developmental)
  • Knowledge of behaviour management strategies
  • Basic understanding of First Aid
  • Good literacy, numeracy and communication skills
