Role: Trainee Patent Attorney, Life Sciences
Location: London
Contract: Full time, permanent.
Hours: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Due to the nature of the role, you may occasionally be required to work outside of these hours to meet business or performance requirements. Any additional hours will be discussed in advance where reasonably practicable.
Finnegan Europe is seeking a trainee patent attorney with a background in the life sciences. No prior knowledge of patent law is required – just a strong enthusiasm for learning, as full training will be provided.
We are looking to recruit a talented graduate with at least one degree in biochemistry or chemistry to join our team of diverse and experienced scientists-turned-legal professionals.
Our team has active practices before the European Patent Office (EPO), the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO), the Unified Patent Court (UPC), the UK courts, and the German courts. Our work includes drafting and prosecuting patent applications, handling oppositions, and post‑grant proceedings before the EPO, conducting freedom‑to‑operate analyses, and supporting litigation matters. We are a group of recognised experts with science and/or engineering backgrounds, many of whom hold advanced degrees in their respective fields.
The role will involve preparing and prosecuting patent applications before the EPO and UKIPO, as well as assisting with EPO oppositions, including both offensive and defensive work.
We offer a competitive salary and benefits package, along with the opportunity to apply your scientific expertise to support clients working at the forefront of technological innovation across a wide range of industries.
This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the world’s leading intellectual property law firms and to become part of our growing team in Finnegan’s London office.
To apply, please send your CV and covering letter to Angela McShane at angela.mcshane@finnegan.com. Applicants must have the legal right to live and work in the UK. We are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role.
