About the role
A consumer health wearable, engineered, working and heading to market, that now needs to look as good as it performs. That is the brief for this Industrial Designer contract: a 15 to 20 day exploratory design sprint at £300 to £350 per day, outside IR35, fully remote, starting late July 2026.
Scope of the Role
The Industrial Designer will take an engineered smart health wearable and evolve its form for genuine consumer appeal ahead of a commercial launch. The pilot design is locked. Your ideas shape the version that ships.
- Review the current design, its space envelope (battery, sensors, PCB) and fresh focus group findings
- Explore form, aesthetics and wearability directions that feel like consumer product, not medical device
- Solve a known attachment challenge in an elegant, believable way
- Propose real world materials and finishes
- Deliver renderings backed by believable, feasible CAD, as native SolidWorks or clean STEP
Key Skills and Experience Required
- Extensive experience as an Industrial Designer or Product Designer on consumer products that reached manufacture
- Fluent surface and form CAD; SolidWorks preferred, any package exporting clean STEP works
- Comfortable designing within fixed internals: batteries, PCBs, sensors, tooling and cost
- Own software and hardware, with genuine availability between late July and the end of August
- Wearables or soft goods experience is a bonus, not a requirement
Salary and Benefits
- £300 to £350 per day
- Outside IR35, independently assessed and insured
- Approx. 15 to 20 days, delivered flexibly over 2 to 4 weeks
- Fully remote, with an optional face-to-face kick-off in central London
- Fast process: one interview, decision within about a week
You would work directly with a Head of Technical who is a career industrial designer with two decades at leading London consultancies, so the brief will be sharp and decisions quick. The client is a well funded health technology startup partnered with respected academic institutions. The engineering already works. This Industrial Designer engagement exists to make the product desirable, and the stated intention is to implement the best of this work in the commercial product launching next year.
