Job Overview

A Nurse Specialist will join the Parkinson’s service at University Hospitals Coventry. The role involves managing Parkinson’s disease patients as part of the clinical team and supporting the development of the Parkinson’s disease practitioner role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide highly specialised practical skills for optimum patient management
  • Participate in drug therapy challenges within the day‑case unit
  • Conduct home visits and manage medication to maximise community care and reduce hospital admissions
  • Lead and participate in nurse‑led clinics supported by the consultant
  • Offer support, advice and training to staff, patients and carers regarding Parkinson’s disease and medication management
  • Coordinate with departmental staff and discharge teams to ensure smooth transitions from pre‑admission to home discharge
  • Incorporate patient and user views in the development and evaluation of the practitioner role
  • Advise patients on drug therapy and, where appropriate, manage medication changes or initiate new prescriptions under Supplementary or Independent Non‑Medical Prescriber qualification within locally agreed guidelines and NMC regulatory requirements

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Registered Nurse with specialist experience in Parkinson’s disease or related neurological conditions
  • Valid Supplementary or Independent Non‑Medical Prescriber qualification, or willingness to obtain one as required by policy
  • Excellent clinical assessment and management skills for Parkinson’s disease patients
  • Strong communication and organisational abilities for multidisciplinary team working
  • Ability to conduct home visits and manage medication in the community setting
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and maintaining up‑to‑date immunisation and vaccination records
