The States of Guernsey are looking for a Consultant Cellular Pathologist to join the team within Pathology Services.This is a new post which has been created due to increase in the histopathology workloads and cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings workloads. The suitable candidate will have a special interest in two or three disciplines. Based on the cancer workloads candidates with special interest in urology and skin pathology or GIT and breast pathology are encouraged to apply. However, any other combination of different specialties is also welcome. The successful candidate will work alongside the current Pathologist who reports in a general capacity. There is sufficient cancer and benign workloads in whichever disciplines the candidate has special interest for a full-time post.
Main duties of the job
You will work with Health and Social Care (HSC) managers and professional colleagues toensure the efficient delivery of clinical services. You are expected to observe the agreedpolicies and procedures, which are drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinicalmatters, and to follow the policies, standing orders and financial instructions of HSC and theStates of Guernsey, and relevant personnel policies and procedures including those relatingto health and safely.

Job responsibilities
The department processes approximately 5,000 requests a year. Skin specimens are thelargest group type followed by gastrointestinal, gynaecology, urological and breastspecimens. Large specimens are from the following surgical procedures: laparoscopic radicalprostatectomy, breast surgery, upper and lower GI surgery (oesophagectomy, gastrectomyand colectomy), hysterectomy, orchidectomy, nephrectomy, thyroidectomy, laryngectomyand cervical lymph node dissection for head and neck cancers.
The appointee will deliver a quality focused area of service or services depending onspecialties sharing day to day duties with colleagues.
The Biomedical Scientists participate in uncomplicated benign tissue dissection.
The department intends to train its Biomedical Scientists to acquire IBMS Diploma in ExpertPractice in Histological Dissection and the appointee will be expected to be supportive in thistraining.
Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Meetings
There are currently seven MDT meetings supported by an MDT Co-ordinator. Histological and radiological images are projected digitally. Digital clinical andmacroscopic images are also projected during the meetings. The successful candidate will beexpected to share the meetings with the current post holder depending on specialty.
Gynaecological Cytology
Although cervical screening is reported in Bristol under contract with North Bristol Trust, thedepartment carries out annual histological and cytological correlations for audit purposes.
Non-Gynaecological Cytology
The Department processes about 50-100 non-gynaecological specimens per year. Thespecimens are reported under contract North Bristol Trust. Semen analysis is reported byBiomedical Scientists locally. Clots from serous fluids are reported as histological specimens.
Autopsies
The hospital performs approximately 50 autopsies a year, predominantly by CTPM which mayenable candidates to opt out of the invasive autopsy rota although PM experience would beadvantageous. Approximatly 90% of autopsies are carried out on behalf of H.M. Procureur forwhich a fee is paid.
Paediatric and Forensic autopsies are carried out by visiting consultants. All physical autopsiesare supported by an anatomical pathology assistant.
On Call Duties
The successful candidate will only be expected to be on call for the police and very rarelyhistopathology frozen sections. The on-call duties for the police involve attending scenes ofsuspicious deaths to advise the police as to whether the Home Office Forensic Pathologistshould attend or not. The appointee will be expected to participate in the on-call service forthe police with the current post-holder on a weekly rota. A BMA fee is paid for attending ascene of death.
Study Leave and Annual Leave
The appointee is entitled to 10 days study leave and between 30 and 32 days annual leave.
Currently, Locum Cellular Pathologists from UK cover for annual leave and study leave for thepost holder. It is expected that the two Consultants will cover for each other. HSC provides agenerous study leave budget.
EXTERNAL QUALITY ASSURANCE SCHEMES:
The appointee will be expected to participate in the general cellular pathology (Wessex)external assurance scheme (EQA) and any other EQA schemes of their choice depending ontheir special interest.
MANAGERIAL STRUCTURE:
The incumbent Cellular Pathologist, was appointed to the post as the overall Clinical Head ofPathology Services reporting to the Medical Director. This role was also the Lead CancerClinician. The Laboratory Services Manager is responsible for all financial and administrativeday-to-day running of the department. The appointee will be expected to actively participatein both departmental and wider Pathology matters concerning clinical governance andstrategic development.
THE PATHOLOGY SERVICES:
The Pathology Department at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital provides a comprehensiveservice to the Bailiwick of Guernsey. With approximately 50 staff across five disciplines, weare a small, friendly department, with a good team working spirit.
The Clinical Lead for the Department is a resident Cellular Pathologist who reports directly tothe Medical Director. The postholder is also the Lead Cancer Clinician for HSC. There is also aresident Consultant Haematologist but no resident Consultants in Microbiology and ClinicalChemistry. However, the Medical Microbiology service is supported 24/7 by phone from UKbased consultants.
The Department process approximately 160,000 delivered requests providing a service toprimary and secondary care and visiting clinicians.
TRAINING:
The appointee will be expected to participate in the training of Biomedical Scientists, whichmay include supervising masters degrees, cut-up & extended cut-up and lecturing to StudentNurses.
CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
The successful candidate will be expected to comply with the Royal College of PathologistsCPD requirements. 1.5 SPAs are included in the indicative job plan to allow for activitiesrelated to revalidation, including CPD, mandatory training, appraisal, quality improvementactivities, etc. Additional SPA activity may be negotiated depending on the interests of thecandidate and the requirements of the department.
Person Specification
Experience
- Wide knowledge and experience in dealing with the expected histopathology workload of a busy District General Hospital.
- Experience in processing and reporting specimens from one or more of the following key diagnostic areas: breast pathology, gastrointestinal pathology, urological pathology, skin pathology, ENT pathology, gynaecological and lung pathology.
- Ability to work efficiently to facilitate effective patient management.
- Ability to work in a Pathology multidisciplinary team environment.
- Ability to work effectively a clinical multidisciplinary environment.
- Ability to deliver high quality teaching to Biomedical Scientists and Student Nurses.
- Evidence of interest and experience in medical audit.
- Commitment to effective departmental management in conjunction with department colleagues.
- Good organisational skills.
- Willingness to accept flexibility to meet the changing needs of the Department and HSC.
- Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues and other users of the Pathology Department.

Qualifications
- FRCPath diploma or show evidence of equivalent qualification.
- Full and specialist registration with a licence to practise with the GMC (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview).
- For applicants who are newly qualified, and UK trained, as well as the above, they must ALSO be a holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. All other applicants will be required to show evidence of equivalency to the UK CCT/of the UK CCT.
