We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Procurement Officer to support the delivery of high-impact procurement activity across the organisation.

As a Procurement Officer, you’ll play a pivotal role in delivering high-impact procurements that support transport, housing, skills, and economic development across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, and Sheffield.

About the role

The role is key to ensuring that our procurement function and practices are efficient, compliant, and aligned with our strategic goals, helping us deliver best value for money across a diverse range of goods and services.

Key responsibilities

  • Support procurement activity for a nominated area of spend, working closely with the Procurement Manager.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to colleagues across SYMCA to ensure procurement is compliant, efficient, and strategically aligned.
  • Help develop and implement systems, procedures, and protocols that underpin effective procurement management.
  • Ensure procurement processes — from tendering to evaluation and award — are delivered on time and in line with organisational standards.
  • Contribute to supplier engagement and relationship management, helping optimise market engagement and buying power.
  • Support the development of the procurement pipeline and management information to identify opportunities for improvement.

About you

  • You’ll be a confident communicator with a proactive, solutions focused mindset.
  • A strong understanding of public sector procurement and a passion for enabling good governance and value-driven decision‑making.
  • Recognised procurement or contract management qualification.
  • Awareness of the full procurement lifecycle and contract management principles.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills, including tender documents and reports.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to work independently.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to provide clear, concise advice to senior stakeholders.
  • Experience of using E‑tender systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across teams and manage competing priorities effectively.
  • Understanding of local government/public sector procurement issues including obligations under the Procurement Act 2023.
  • Experience in drafting and implementing operational processes and procedures.
