Job Summary

Nottingham Youth Orchestra seeks an experienced General Manager to guide NYO through its 40th Anniversary celebrations and into the next stage of development. The role combines day‑to‑day management with long‑term planning to keep NYO operationally and financially stable.

Job Description

Artistic Planning

  • Lead the artistic direction of NYO in consultation with conductors, administrators, and the NYO board.
  • Nurture a culture of excellence by ensuring the quality of music making is inspirational for members, staff, and audiences.
  • Inspire students and acknowledge their achievements.
  • Build a sense of community across the classical and jazz orchestras.

Strategy & Planning

  • Develop a vision for the future of NYO.
  • Promote NYO’s achievements to a wider audience, including the educational sector, local community, and potential sponsors.
  • Ensure the Tour Manager has all necessary support for the summer tour.

Fundraising

  • Collaborate with the board and freelance bid writers to develop a fundraising strategy and identify new funding sources.

People Management

  • Ensure staff contracts are up‑to‑date and signed annually.
  • Visit evening rehearsals and liaise with the rehearsal supervisor about any issues.
  • Maintain an overview of tutor attendance and usage of tutor depots.
  • Act as line manager to the administrator, events administrator, rehearsal supervisor, tour manager, and tutors.
  • Chair tutor or parent helper meetings, drawing up agendas.

Marketing & Student Recruitment

  • Ensure NYO’s public image is consistent and reflects the organisation’s work.
  • Develop and implement a new marketing plan.
  • Ensure all ensembles are equally promoted.

Student Management

  • Maintain an overview of the promotion process between orchestras.
  • Liaise with the administrator about parents’ feedback.
  • Oversee student bursaries.

Financial Management

  • Manage NYO’s budget alongside the administrator and treasurer.
  • Approve payments set up by the treasurer.

Governance

  • Oversee and update NYO policy documents on child safeguarding, health & welfare, GDPR, equal opportunities, student behaviour, and parent helper guidelines.
  • Set quarterly board meeting dates and report to trustees.
  • Keep the chair informed of any urgent issues.

Job Requirements

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Exceptional people‑management skills.
  • Excellent communicator with a friendly, professional, and diplomatic manner.
  • Experience working with children & young people.
  • Proven ability to deliver work consistently and efficiently under pressure while balancing conflicting priorities.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Experience building and maintaining strong working relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Passionate about the arts, music education & youth music making.
  • Effective skills in steering meetings to remain focused, managing time & personalities, and promoting appropriate discussion & effective outcomes.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Fundraising & development experience.
  • Experience working with freelance musicians.
  • Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
  • Connection to the Nottinghamshire educational music scene and community.

Job Responsibilities

See Job Description above. This is a part‑time role – 2.5 days per week (0.5 FTE). Attendance will be expected at all concerts and key events, some rehearsals, and regular team meetings (some may be online).
