Sister/Charge Nurse, Band 6 (Maternity Cover)

Band 6 (Maternity Cover) – 32.25 hours a week.
The post holder will be professionally accountable for the maintenance of standards and professional practice as set by the NMC Code of Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviour and relevant professional guidelines. They will regularly take charge of the practice setting or defined area of the practice setting / group of patients and take responsibility for ensuring the coordination and direct provision of high standard of holistic, patient centred care by assessing nursing care and health education needs, and the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care for each patient. To be designated to act as a deputy to the person holding continuing responsibility for the organisation and management of the practice setting. To demonstrate and facilitate others to develop the necessary skills and experience in ward/department management and provide leadership in the absence of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse.
Main duties of the job
- Always adhere to the NMC code of practice and operate within the NMC standards of proficiency for Registered Nurses
- Act as a resource and support nursing teams in the care delivery of patients across specialities
- Co‑ordinate the ward effectively
- Liaise with consultants and site managers about the bed state and ensure safe and efficient flow of patients
- Assist and rotate clinically across the wards and TAU when required
- Contribute to the development of specialty protocols and guidelines
- Work alongside nursing staff, role‑model high standards of practice whilst assessing, delivering and evaluating patient care and highlighting any areas of development for team members as required
- Competent in the use of all relevant Trust IT systems including electronic patient record, email, and Trak‑Care
- Maintain regular use of emails to keep abreast of information disseminated in the Trust
- Actively monitor and support the health and wellbeing of team members: advise on available resources and escalating for line manager assistance as required
- Responsible for the administration of clinical procedures/treatments within the specialist area, acting as an expert resource for the nursing team
- Effectively input and retrieve patient and staff information from computer‑based systems, specifically Sunrise EPR, Safe Care and other specialist systems and advise and support other team members in their use
- Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records
- Administer medication and treatment within the Procedure for the Ordering, Prescribing and Administration of Medication Guidelines
- Deliver safe care within a challenging and changing clinical environment, using equipment and resources safely and as appropriate
- Participate in audits and undertake local research relevant to area of practice
- Adhere to all Trust policies and procedures and professional code of conduct
- Demonstrate time‑management skills and prioritising
- Show insight into own skills and knowledge and know when to signpost or ask for advice
- Keep up to date with own skills and changes to clinical practices, both locally and nationally
- Confident in addressing poor practice and lack of engagement
- Show awareness of fairness, equality, and diversity

Person Specification
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
- Registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
- Management /leadership qualifications or equivalent experience
- In depth knowledge of Trauma and Orthopaedic patients and operational processes within the specialty
- Knowledge of the trust appraisal and development process
- Able to supervise non-registered and less experienced staff to ensure effective service and care delivery
- Ability to use IT systems required Electronic Patient Records, Trakcare, SafeCare, Health Roster, Microsoft Office and Trust Intranet)
- Ability to prioritize own workload and that of others as appropriate
- Personally resilient and able to manage complexity and work in an ambiguous or changing environment
- Demonstrates ability to maintain and contribute to the development of standards practice, conduct or decision making in conjunction with the team, senior nurse and Matron of
- Act as a role model, lead by example to ensure the Trust’s values and behaviour’s are reinforced throughout the area of practice
- Able to effectively and appropriately elevate concerns to reduce risk and promote patient safety
- Demonstrated ability to keep up to date with the professional issues that influence nursing practice relating to areas of clinical practice, management, education and research
- Demonstrates ability to question and challenge nursing practice in a constructive way so that standards of practice are continually evaluated and improved
- Able to contribute to the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies, protocols or guidelines relevant to area of practice
- Tenacity to pursue goals energetically and succeed despite resistance
- Ability to lead, manage and motivate all staff within sphere of responsibility
- Knowledge of the trust appraisal and development process
- Knowledge of leadership styles and change management strategy
- A good understanding of clinical governance and incident reporting
- Completion of Bronze or Silver QI
- Teaching and Assessing mentor course or equivalent
- Management /leadership qualifications or equivalent experience
