School Caretaker (CARETAKER) Northwood, England

A reliable and proactive School Caretaker is needed for a friendly primary school in Northwood. The role involves maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for pupils, staff and visitors.

Location: NorthwoodHours: Monday to Friday, 7:00am – 1:00pmPay: £17.00 – £18.00 per hourStart Date: September 4th to December 18th

Key Responsibilities

Site Security

  • Opening the school each morning and securing the premises as required.
  • Conducting routine security checks around the school buildings and grounds.
  • Responding to alarm activations where necessary.
  • Managing access for contractors and visitors.

Maintenance and Repairs

  • Carrying out minor repairs and general maintenance tasks.
  • Replacing light bulbs and undertaking basic decorating duties.
  • Reporting larger maintenance issues to the school leadership team or external contractors.

Health & Safety

  • Conducting regular health and safety inspections.
  • Ensuring fire exits, walkways and communal areas remain clear and safe.
  • Monitoring the condition of playground equipment and outdoor areas.
  • Supporting fire drills and emergency procedures.

Grounds Maintenance

  • Keeping playgrounds, pathways and entrances clean and safe.
  • Litter picking and maintaining outdoor areas.
  • Carrying out basic gardening tasks, including weeding, hedge trimming and leaf clearance.
  • Gritting pathways during adverse weather conditions.

Facilities Support

  • Checking that toilets, classrooms and communal areas are maintained to a high standard.
  • Ensuring essential supplies such as soap and paper towels are replenished.
  • Supporting room and hall set‑ups for assemblies, school events and parent evenings.
  • Receiving deliveries and assisting with storage management.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in caretaking, facilities, maintenance, site supervision or a similar role.
  • Good practical DIY and maintenance skills.
  • Knowledge of health and safety procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative.
  • Strong communication and problem‑solving skills.
  • Reliable, trustworthy and committed to maintaining high standards.

Safeguarding

This role requires an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references. Applicants must hold a current Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service or be willing to undergo a new DBS application during the recruitment process.
