Are you passionate about creating safe, compliant, and supportive working environments? We’re looking for a dedicated Corporate Health and Safety Adviser to join our team and help ensure that the council meets its statutory responsibilities and continues to prioritise the wellbeing of its staff, schools, and wider community.
This is a highly visible, hands‑on role, requiring regular presence across council sites and schools to deliver training, build relationships, and support teams in practice.
In this vital role, you’ll provide expert health and safety advice and guidance across a range of council services, including local authority operations, educational settings such as schools and trusts, and other client organisations. You’ll work collaboratively with internal managers and external partners to raise awareness, strengthen health and safety culture, and embed best practices across the board.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensuring the council remains compliant with all relevant health and safety legislation and responsibilities, while promoting a proportionate, risk‑based approach.
- Supporting the implementation of corporate health and safety policies and strategy across a variety of settings.
- Designing and delivering engaging face‑to‑face health and safety training, and coaching managers and teams to build practical capability and confidence.
- Leading accident investigations and providing clear, constructive recommendations.
- Developing and delivering a proactive and robust risk‑based health and safety audit programme, using findings to drive real improvements in practice and culture across both the corporate and educational estate.
- Acting as a visible, approachable presence across services, supporting teams on the ground and promoting a positive safety culture.
Please note this role does not attract sponsorship.
Qualifications and Experience
You are an experienced and highly capable Health and Safety professional with a strong track record in delivering practical and engaging solutions across operational environments. You’ve worked closely with senior managers, clients, and regulatory bodies such as the Health and Safety Executive and Fire Authority, offering sound advice, conducting audits, ensuring compliance, and delivering impactful training and guidance. Your excellent communication skills allow you to engage confidently with a wide range of stakeholders – including management, employees, and Trade Union representatives – successfully influencing and promoting a positive, proportionate health and safety culture across organisations.
You’re comfortable working independently, undertaking in-depth research, and producing clear, detailed documentation – from complex reports and policy documents to tailored training materials. Your training and presentation skills are a particular strength, and you’re confident designing and delivering engaging, practical learning that resonates with diverse audiences and drives behavioural change. Highly organised, you thrive in busy environments, balancing conflicting demands with a calm, solution‑focused approach.
You bring strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, particularly in audit, accident investigation, root cause analysis, and risk assessment, with a clear focus on translating findings into practical improvements that influence behaviour on the ground. You hold a NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice and are committed to ongoing professional development.
