Practitioner Psychologist, Psychotherapist or Psychological Therapist

We are seeking a motivated clinician for a 12‑month fixed‑term band 8a Practitioner Psychologist or Psychotherapist position with our STEP (Southwark Team for Early Psychosis) service. This Early Interventions for Psychosis (EIP) service offers psychological therapy to patients and their networks. There are two part‑time vacancies (2–3 days per week) and one full‑time post.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will contribute to the STEP team through direct and indirect psychological therapeutic interventions for patients, groups and families. Direct, evidence‑based interventions include:
- CBT for psychosis
- Trauma‑focused CBT (tf‑CBT)
- EMDR
- CBT‑based family interventions
- Open Dialogue
- Systemic Family Therapy
- Arts Therapies
The role also involves group work, supporting low‑intensity interventions, and delivering services on a stepped‑care basis.
Job responsibilities
- Provide specialist psychological interventions including assessment, treatment, planning, implementation and monitoring of outcomes.
- Create a psychologically safe environment for staff, service users and carers from diverse backgrounds.
- Provide clinical supervision and consultation as a specialist for the STEP team.
- Promote service evaluation, audit, research and policy development.
- Work autonomously within registration body guidelines and service policies.
- Agree outcomes with clinical/professional lead and determine best methods to achieve them.
- Support staff initiatives and participate in staff support work when appropriate.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Recognised qualification in a core mental health profession (psychiatric nursing, clinical psychology, medicine, social work, occupational therapy) or equivalent experience and competence for NHS mental health work.
- Entry‑level qualification in applied psychological therapy/mental health/social welfare profession (or equivalent) with demonstrable practice and professional registration (Professional Doctorate or MSc + PG Diploma).
- Additional training beyond entry‑level in a specialised area of psychological practice (e.g., PG Diploma, specialist short courses, portfolio of supervised practice) assessed as equivalent to a Postgraduate Diploma or higher.
- Registered with an appropriate professional body (HCPC, UKCP, BABCP).
Experience
- Clinical specialist experience under supervision in services for people with psychosis and complex mental health difficulties.
- Specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients with complex needs (e.g., psychosis, substance misuse).
- Experience supervising assistants and trainees.Post‑qualification experience addressing diversity issues within local communities.
Knowledge
- Theoretical knowledge of psychopathology and evidence base for relevant treatments (CBT for psychosis, CBT for complex mental health difficulties).
- Knowledge of factors affecting acceptability and accessibility of mental health care.
- Advanced knowledge of psychological therapy theory, application, and assessment psychometrics.
- Knowledge of a range of therapeutic ideas/approaches and systemic models relevant to discipline.
Skills and abilities
- Administration of psychometric and neuropsychological tests, including complex manipulation of test materials.
- Consultation skills for working with the multi‑professional team and managing multiple people’s needs concurrently.
- Ability to manage emotionally stressful situations (e.g., abuse or trauma, self‑harm, aggressive behaviour).
- Ability to manage highly complex situations with competing views and create systemic engagement to develop solutions.

Salary
£66,274 to £73,496 a year (inclusive of HCAs pro rata).
