About the role
A supportive and inclusive SEND school in Lincoln, working with children and young people who have communication difficulties, additional learning needs, and developmental delays.
The school places strong emphasis on total communication, ensuring pupils can express themselves confidently and access learning effectively. Staff use a range of approaches, including Makaton, visuals, and structured routines, to promote understanding, emotional regulation, and independence in a safe and nurturing environment.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist Makaton support to pupils across the school, both 1:1 and in small groups.
- Use Makaton signs and symbols to support:
- Communication
- Understanding of instructions and routines
- Emotional expression and regulation
- Work alongside teachers and support staff to embed Makaton into daily classroom practice.
- Support pupils during lessons, transitions, and unstructured times to encourage consistent communication.
- Create and use visual resources, symbols, and communication aids to support learning.
- Model Makaton use for staff and pupils to promote a whole‑school communication approach.
- Monitor pupil progress in communication and engagement, contributing to individual support plans.
Pre‑requisites
- Experience working with children or young people with SEND and communication needs.
- Competency in Makaton (training or practical experience), with confidence using signs and symbols consistently.
- An understanding of how communication difficulties can impact learning, behaviour, and emotional wellbeing.
- A patient, nurturing, and adaptable approach.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills.
- Relevant qualifications or experience such as:
- Teaching Assistant
- Speech, Language and Communication support
- SEND support roles
- Makaton training or certification
- Or equivalent hands‑on experience
