Consultant Rheumatologist (Southport & Ormskirk)

This post is for a consultant in Rheumatology. It is a whole‑time (10 patient agreements) role offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care across Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

Applicants are required to hold Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (UK or equivalent qualifications), to be fully registered with the General Medical Council, and to be on the Specialist Register or to obtain their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) within six months of the interview date.

Interviews for this position will be held on Tuesday 1st September 2026.

Main duties of the job

The post is for a full‑time consultant (10PA) providing excellent Rheumatology care across Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. A specialist interest in Rheumatology is welcomed.

  • This post holder will be employed for a full‑time post (10PA), although consideration will be given to candidates who are planning to work less than full time.
  • Provision of ward consultations for inpatients is necessary according to requirements.
  • The post holder is required to participate in the management structure of the Medical Division.

Proposed job plan:

DCC: 7.5PA (5 Clinics 4.75PA, Clinical Admin 1.75PA, Advice and guidance 0.25PA, MDT 0.25 PA and Ward referral 0.5PA)

SPA: 2.5 (1.5 PA revalidation and up to 1PA for Audit, research, and supervision)

On‑Call Commitment

Qualifications

  • Full GMC registration and on Specialist Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview.
  • UK‑trained applicants must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Non‑UK‑trained applicants must provide evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • MRCP or equivalent medical qualification.
  • MD/PhD or equivalent medical qualification.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Evidence of achievement of competencies by time of appointment in line with DMC standards/Good Medical Practice, including Good clinical care, maintaining good medical practice, good relationships and communication with patients, good working relationships with colleagues, good teaching and training, professional behaviour and probity, and delivery of good acute clinical care.
  • Clinical training and experience to manage, supervise and offer expert clinical opinion on patients presenting to the Rheumatology Department.

Skills

  • Experience of supervising doctors and practitioners with the ability to teach clinical and practical skills.
  • Evidence of appropriate teaching experience.
  • Demonstrates ability to undertake robust audit within team structure.
  • Evidence of feedback or peer review on these skills.
  • Evidence of formally supervising medical students, F1, F2, ACCS and specialist trainees.
  • Evidence of relevant research, e.g. presentations, publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
  • The ability to apply outcomes to clinical problems.

  • Is up to date and fit to practice safely.
