Overview

Mechanical Engineering Services (MES) is a technical engineering consultancy and manufacturing service, provided as part of the Rehabilitation Engineering and Aids for Living (REAL) unit within Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering (NMPCE). It offers 2D and 3D design facilities coupled with manufacturing capability to support a number of Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals clinical services and other internal and external stakeholders, including the Regional Technical Aids Service (RTAS). The Clinical Technologist’s role is based at the Freeman Hospital.

Responsibilities

Design, manufacture and installation of mechanical solutions for service users, working closely with partner services that provide assistive aids and wheelchairs.

Modify or initially manufacture items to customer specification, support research, prototype and produce single items or small batches using the latest technologies and materials.

Support assessment of need, problem solving, risk analysis, design, manufacture and documentation.

Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level in engineering or a science‑related subject, or equivalent (e.g. HNC or HND with in‑depth relevant experience).
  • Specialist knowledge of engineering design, materials and manufacture, including proficiency in milling and turning with both manual and CNC machine tools.
  • Experience of fabrication and TIG welding desirable; training provision available.
  • Will complete the IPEM Clinical Technologist Training Scheme to achieve professional registration as a Clinical Technologist with either the RCT or AHCS if not already registered.
  • Experience with IT packages: Microsoft Office, databases, and 2D/3D CAD modelling.
  • Full valid UK driving licence and willingness to travel regionally.
