Job Overview

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Permanent Reactive Caretaker/Janitor to cover our Barnsley Schools account – You will be primarily based at one school location, however you would be expected to be mobile across our 11 schools on the account as per school requirements.

Essential requirements: UK driving licence and own vehicle, for which mileage and insurance can be claimed through the business.

Position: 37.5 hours per week. Shift pattern: Monday to Friday, 5:30 am – 6:00 pm (within this period). Salary: £14.13 per hour. Reactive Caretakers cover schools during absences, sickness, holiday, and other reactive needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver defined and non‑specific tasks.
  • Act professionally and safely following Amey’s Zero Code Policies and Procedures.
  • Comply with internal and external HSEQ requirements (RAMs, COSHH).
  • Provide a maintenance service that meets client contractual requirements.
  • Use only Amey‑approved chemicals, machinery, consumables and equipment.
  • Operate machinery safely in line with guidelines and training.
  • Report any concerns or issues to your People Manager immediately.
  • Complete all duties within the time provided to Amey defined standards.
  • Attend and engage in briefings and training sessions, potential requirement of additional hours.
  • Carry out any other reasonable requests as directed by your People Manager.
  • Wear appropriate PPE & uniform provided by Amey.
  • Conduct yourself in a professional manner.
  • Adhere to Key Holding policies; use keys only per shift and not share.
  • Abide by Lone Working policies when necessary.
  • Follow emergency and escalation procedures.
  • Escalate any issues with intruder/fire alarm systems and panels.
  • Report issues via Helpdesk/Escalation during your shift.
  • Reactive caretaking to cover/open schools across the account when needed.
  • Cover planned holiday absences across the account.
  • Assist a school as organised by your People Manager when no reactive or holiday cover required.
  • Escalate issues to Helpdesk/Premises Manager to ensure smooth running of premises.
  • Carry out day‑to‑day DIY/maintenance and minor repairs (furniture fixtures, wall repairs).
  • Ensure heating, lighting and alarm systems are working properly.
  • Check that all doors and windows are locked when the building is not in use.
  • Guard premises against vandalism.
  • Arrange and report any required maintenance outside day‑to‑day repairs.
  • Manage site employees to keep site open and ready, escalating issues to Premises Manager.
  • Arrange chairs, tables, and set‑ups for meetings/assemblies, exam sets, and clear afterward.
  • Complete mandatory/ statutory PPMs.
  • Communicate professionally with the school as first point of call for Amey.
  • Complete relevant Amey documentation to a good standard (Contractor Inductions, Site access forms, reviewing of RAMS).
  • Use Microsoft Teams/Concept tablets and phones competently.
  • Monitor and respond to emails professionally.
  • Use personal vehicle, claim business mileage via SAP Concur.
