We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic, and organised Pharmacy Technician to join our Pharmacy Medicines Safety, Optimisation and Governance Team at LUHFT. This postholder will work within the pharmacy medicines safety team, taking lead responsibility for key aspects of the work programme to improve compliance with controlled drug and medicines storage standards. Extensive experience and knowledge working as a registered pharmacy technician in a hospital pharmacy are essential for supporting delivery of the best quality and safest care to patients.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead action to improve compliance with controlled drug and medicines storage standards in line with legislation, liaising with the Lead Pharmacist/Technician Medicines Safety.
- Proactively identify, resolve, and escalated clinical governance and risk‑management issues relating to medicines management within the pharmacy department and Trust-wide.
- Design, undertake and support delivery of outcomes from audit, improvement and research projects.
- Develop standardised medicines incident reporting, including analysis and coordinating the narrative for Trust reports.
- Provide specialist advice, tools and upskilling to pharmacy and multi-disciplinary teams across the Trust for safe storage requirements when clinical areas are moved/re‑designed.
- Lead audits to assess compliance with controlled drug and other medicine storage standards and engage teams Trust‑wide to improve practice.
- Act as a point of contact and resource for pharmacy, medicines management and storage issues, audits, improvement projects and health and safety.
- Support divisional and Trust governance leads in recording, monitoring and feeding back on safety issues, incidents and risks.
- Represent the medicines safety team at Trust meetings and relevant pharmacy department sections, providing specialist safety and quality guidance.
- Investigate medicines safety incidents, develop preventative actions and lessons learned, and support reporting of clinical and non‑clinical incidents and near‑misses.
- Assist in developing a just and learning culture by identifying system failures that contribute to incidents.
- Contribute to medicines safety improvement strategies and annual plans.
- Design and undertake audit, research and improvement projects within the department or Trust‑wide, analysing data and engaging stakeholders to evaluate effectiveness.
- Initiate service and quality improvement ideas and play a key role in fostering a culture of continual improvement.
- Support actions in response to National Patient Safety Agency alerts and notices, ensuring responses within required timelines.
- Deputise for the Lead Pharmacist/Technician Medicines Safety to ensure the medicines safety agenda is delivered.
- Represent the Pharmacy Department in Trust‑wide meetings, providing specialist guidance and ensuring consistent governance standards.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- NVQ Level 3 in Pharmaceutical Sciences, BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent.
- Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council as a qualified Pharmacy Technician.
- Extensive experience as a Pharmacy Technician, including a leadership role.
- Previous experience working in a hospital pharmacy and understanding of medicines safety and clinical governance.
- Experience designing and delivering training for different staff groups.
- Experience writing and reviewing policies, procedures and guidance, interpreting national legislation and policy.
- Experience with medicines safety and clinical governance work.
- Access to vulnerable people in the course of duties; requirement for Disclosure and Barring Service check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.
Desirable Attributes
- Leadership/management qualification.
- Quality improvement qualification or demonstrable training.
- Experience designing and supervising audits and service‑evaluation projects with improvement plans.
- Experience writing business cases and options appraisals.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; advanced presentation skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Access.
- Accurate, methodical and detail‑oriented.
- UK professional registration.
