Engineering Manager, Payments (UK)

Depop is a peer‑to‑peer circular fashion marketplace that connects millions of buyers and sellers worldwide. We are looking for a UK‑based Engineering Manager to lead one of our two Payments squads, responsible for a range of financial flows including wallet balances, re‑spend, withdrawals, refunds, seller onboarding, and tax capture.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the team delivers high‑quality solutions that meet business needs while maintaining a strong focus on delivery and measurable value.
  • Lead and support a cross‑functional team of 3–7 engineers (Backend and iOS), keeping them motivated and set up for success.
  • Coach and guide team members through regular 1:1s and continuous feedback, fostering growth and career development.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Marketing, Ops, Analytics, and Engineering to align on goals, define priorities, and ensure smooth cross‑functional collaboration.
  • Advocate for an inclusive culture, promoting team health, diversity, and continuous learning.

Qualifications

  • Proven track record as an Engineering Manager building high‑performing teams and processes.
  • Strong Backend engineering background (preferably on the JVM) with experience leading from a technical perspective.
  • Experience in Fulfilment or Payments, including integration with vendors such as Stripe or PayPal.
  • Ability to drive delivery across full‑stack, bridging Backend and Front‑end to uphold high engineering standards.
  • Strong decision‑making skills based on data, a bias toward simplicity, and ability to manage stakeholders with varying priorities.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and interpersonal skills that inspire collaboration and positive outcomes.
  • Bonus: familiarity with Scala, Java, or TypeScript; experience with observability, tracking, and data pipelines; prior work in an app‑first business.
