Shape the Future of Scientific Discovery

At Oxford Instruments Andor, we are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in scientific imaging. As a global leader in high-performance light measuring solutions, we combine cutting‑edge developments in sensors, electronics, optics and software to create technology that enables some of the world’s most important scientific breakthroughs.

Our low‑light imaging cameras, spectroscopy solutions and microscopy systems help researchers develop cancer treatments, explore the depths of space, and advance clean energy innovations. We are experts in measuring light down to a single photon and capturing events occurring within one billionth of a second.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Senior macOS Software Engineer to take ownership of the macOS architecture for our commercial software products. This is a highly technical role where you’ll ensure our sophisticated C++ image analysis and 3D rendering applications perform seamlessly across Apple’s hardware ecosystem. You’ll drive performance, reliability and scalability while maintaining cross‑platform compatibility and leveraging the latest macOS technologies.

You’ll work alongside talented software engineers, scientists and product teams to deliver innovative solutions that directly enable world‑leading research and discovery.

What You Will Do

  • Architect, design, develop and maintain native macOS application features and cross‑platform C++ core libraries.
  • Lead the development and optimisation of software for Apple Silicon and the wider macOS ecosystem.
  • Resolve complex platform‑specific challenges involving rendering, memory management and multi‑threading.
  • Deliver robust, scalable and maintainable solutions to technically demanding problems.
  • Drive continuous improvement across software development, testing and deployment processes.
  • Manage and optimise Xcode builds, CMake configurations and macOS CI/CD pipelines.
  • Gather requirements and contribute to the development of both new and legacy products.
  • Support internal teams and external customers with Mac‑specific deployments and technical issues.
  • Participate in technical investigations, innovation initiatives and architectural decisions.
  • Collaborate effectively within Agile development teams.
  • Occasionally travel to other Andor offices and customer sites when required.

What We Are Looking For

  • Degree in Software Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a software development role.
  • Strong proficiency in C++ and object‑oriented software design.
  • Deep understanding of the macOS ecosystem, Apple Silicon architecture, Xcode, build pipelines and memory profiling tools.
  • Strong experience with Git, source control systems and collaborative development practices.
  • Experience across the full software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering through testing and support.
  • Strong knowledge of software architecture, design patterns and Clean Code principles.
  • Excellent understanding of data structures, algorithms and computational complexity.
  • Knowledge of Agile software development methodologies.
  • Proven ability to learn quickly, take initiative and solve complex technical problems.
  • Experience with cross‑platform UI frameworks such as Qt.
  • Experience transitioning and supporting cross‑platform applications on macOS.
  • Knowledge of computer vision, image analysis or scientific imaging applications.
  • Experience within Life Sciences, scientific software or related domains.
  • Awareness of cybersecurity principles and secure software development practices.

About You

  • Enjoy solving challenging technical problems and working at a deep system level.
  • Take ownership and accountability for delivering results.
  • Balance strategic thinking with hands‑on technical execution.
  • Communicate effectively and influence technical decisions.
  • Adapt quickly when priorities change.
  • Collaborate openly and support colleagues across teams.
  • Challenge existing approaches and actively contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Have a passion for quality, innovation and engineering excellence.

We Value Potential, we know that no candidate will meet every requirement listed. If you are excited by the opportunity and believe your skills, experience and passion could make an impact, we welcome applications from individuals whose experience may not align perfectly with every criterion.
