We have an excellent opportunity to join North Yorkshire Youth Justice Service as a Victim Liaison Officer. This is a key and rewarding role where you will ensure that the voice, rights and needs of victims of youth crime are central to our work with children and families.
About the service
North Yorkshire Youth Justice Service sits within the Early Help Service and is a well-established, high-performing multi-agency partnership. We work collaboratively with a range of statutory, voluntary and community organisations to prevent offending, reduce reoffending, protect the public and safeguard children.
Our practice is underpinned by a Child First and trauma-informed approach, ensuring that children are supported to build on their strengths, develop positive identities and make meaningful change. At the same time, we are committed to ensuring that victims are treated with dignity and respect, are kept informed, and are offered opportunities to participate in restorative and reparative processes in line with the Victims’ Code.
About the role
The core focus of the role is to contribute to the protection of the public and the safeguarding and welfare of children by planning, developing and delivering high-quality work with victims.
You will adopt a proactive, systematic and victim-focused approach, ensuring that victims are identified, offered services and supported to engage in a way that meets their individual needs. The role places a strong emphasis on the use of restorative justice principles and processes, ensuring these are delivered safely, appropriately and in line with national standards and legislation.
Key Requirements
- Provide expert advice and support to victims of youth crime.
- To work with victims of youth crime, their families and/or representatives.
- To develop a range of restorative approaches, including direct and indirect contacts with victims, mediation and conferencing.
- To lead and mediate Restorative Justice Processes through Face-to-Face meetings, Referral Panels, direct Reparation, Restorative Justice Conferences and Court attendance.
- To promote the work of the YJS in dealing with victims of crime.
- Establish rapport and respectful, trusting relationships with children, young people, their families and carers.
What we are looking for
We are looking for a committed and skilled practitioner who is passionate about working with victims and ensuring their voices are heard. You will have experience of working with children, families or victims of crime and demonstrate a strong understanding of restorative justice principles and relevant victim legislation, including the Victims’ Code.
You will also bring an understanding of trauma-informed practice and a commitment to inclusive, culturally responsive approaches that recognise and respond to diverse needs.
It is an exciting time in Children and Young Peoples Services in North Yorkshire as we plan our approach in respect of the Families First Partnership Programme and how we will be responding to the social care reforms. Work is underway to plan our approach and implementations for 2027. As a result of this, some realignment may happen with job roles in the future, we want to be transparent about this in respect of this role.
