Responsibilities
- Provide sound financial advice and support to departments, ensuring effective management and monitoring of departmental funds, including operational budgets and other external activities.
- Participate in budgeting, monitoring, reporting and forecasting routines, including month‑end, quarter‑end and year‑end processes.
- Oversee a portfolio of large, complex activities, making decisions and reacting to changing and conflicting priorities.
- Engage regularly with finance and non‑finance teams.
- Manage at least one staff member.
- Work with the Department of Estates & Facilities Management to provide finance support and information, ensuring financial plans are sustainable and risks identified, understood and managed.
- Deliver expert financial support, guidance and management information with a focus on excellent customer service.
- Prepare accurate income and expenditure forecasts on a monthly and quarterly basis, analyse variances against budget/forecast and recommend actions or mitigation.
- Prepare quarterly and year‑end reconciliations and coordinate year‑end procedures across departments.
- Provide information and advice on budgetary control and activity forecasting, identify and offer solutions to minimise risk or conflict with university financial regulations.
- Support and enable finance staff to work to the highest professional standards and encourage a culture of continuous professional development.
- Lead colleagues in challenging activities and processes, identifying and delivering improvements to maximise effectiveness.
- Collaborate with other finance business partners, the finance manager and head of finance to plan workload allocations, ensuring objectives and deadlines are achieved and productivity optimized.
- Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.
Person Specification
- Sound working knowledge of the key principles of financial management, including financial forecasting, budget monitoring and control, and month‑end routines.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, relationship‑building and influencing skills; professional credibility to operate as a finance leader and advisor.
- Leadership skills in managing, motivating and developing a team; ability to motivate high performance in line with the department’s vision and values.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills; ability to interpret and evaluate financial and business information to inform decisions.
- Qualified or part qualified accountant (e.g., CIMA, ACCA or equivalent qualification).
- Ability to communicate complex financial information to a non‑financial audience, including the production of high‑quality financial reports.
- Excellent IT skills, particularly with Microsoft Excel, and experience with finance systems and reporting solutions in an operational environment.
- Proactive ability to work to multiple deadlines, organising team resources and prioritising workloads.
- Awareness and interest in the issues facing the higher education sector.
