An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Head Teacher to join our team at our excellently resourced Whalsay School.
About the School
Whalsay School is a non-denominational school located in Symbister, Whalsay. It provides nursery, primary and secondary education up to S4 for children from the whole island. The school has a nursery setting, four composite primary classes and S1-4 secondary classes. Currently 164 pupils are on the roll. The school is managed by a Head Teacher and a Depute Head Teacher (job-share). The current staffing complement is 17 part‑time/full‑time teachers assisted by support staff.
Responsibilities and Qualifications
- Hold or be eligible to hold registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).
- Demonstrate vision, energy, initiative, strong communication skills and self‑discipline.
- Lead the school team and support teachers and support staff to deliver high quality education.
Conditions and Compensation
- Grade: Depute Head Teacher & Head Teacher 5.
- Salary: inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £2,997 per annum (pro rata).
- Permanent Full Time post for 35.0 Hours per Week.
- Preferred candidates will join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme or update before formal offer.
- Must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland prior to starting.
- Relocation package applies.

- Flexible working arrangements are available.
