Fixed term Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist

We are looking for a fixed‑term consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist with a special interest in maternal medicine and pre‑term labour management to join the established team at University Hospitals Sussex. The role will support the current post holder who also provides bereavement services and acute gynaecology on‑call duties.

Job overview

Full time – 10 sessions per week, 9‑month contract until 01/04/2027. Salary £113,565 – £150,569 per annum.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide maternal medicine and pre‑term labour care, including skill to place cervical sutures.
  • Provide on‑call services on a 1 in 8 rota for both obstetrics and gynaecology.
  • Carry out general gynaecology and operate independently.
  • Supervise junior doctors and medical students.
  • Actively participate in audit, research and quality improvement projects.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues and patients.

Person specification

Experience / Qualifications

  • Full and specialist registration with the GMC or eligibility for registration within six months of interview.
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology within six months of interview, or evidence of equivalent qualification.
  • MRCOG or recognised equivalent.
  • Evidence of experience in maternal medicine skills (e.g., ATSM) and cervical scanning and suturing.

Clinical Skills and Experience

  • Expertise in benign gynaecological procedures and laparoscopy.
  • Expertise in managing acute obstetrics.
  • Evidence of training in maternal medicine.
  • Experience in gynaecological ultrasound for cervical length measurement.

Knowledge

  • Broad experience within and outside the specialty.

Organisation and Planning

  • Ability to work in multi‑professional teams.
  • Understanding of NHS, clinical governance and resource constraints.
  • Evidence of managerial skills and achievements or courses attended.

Teaching Skills

  • Interest and commitment to teaching.
  • Recognised teaching qualification.

Academic and Research

  • Participation in audit.
  • Prizes and honours.
  • Appropriate progression of career to date.

Personal Attributes

  • Good communication skills.
