What can I earn?
- Starting salary of £45,000, increasing to £49,000 once all training is complete.
- Typical overtime shifts at premium rates can add around £3,500.
- Refer a friend and receive £500.
What are the minimum requirements?
- Qualified RN Adult, RMN (dual registration), RGN, or paramedic.
- At least 12 months of prior custody experience, 3 years post‑qualification experience, and experience in general practice, emergency medicine, walk‑in centres, substance misuse services, prison healthcare, mental health, or ambulance services as an adult RN.
- Three years of UK residency.
- Current manual driving licence with no restrictions (to travel to other custody suites or local hospitals).
- All candidates are subject to police vetting checks.
What does the role involve?
Your main responsibility will be to lead a team of HCPs providing detained individuals with accurate assessments, ensuring their care and wellbeing needs are met. You will manage rota gaps, cover as needed, supervise and appraise HCPs, and work as part of an integrated team with the clinical lead and senior lead to ensure local processes follow national clinical governance standards and the force’s specific needs.

- Appraisal and performance management training
- Non‑medical independent and supplementary prescribing training
- Master’s degree in Advanced Clinical Practice in Custody Healthcare
- RCUK approved Advanced Life Support training
- Mentoring from experienced CLSs
- ‘Leading Together’ management training course
- FFLM Licentiate in General Forensic Medicine Parts 1 and 2 within 5 years of recruitment
- UKAFN ASET in Forensic Practice within 3 years of recruitment
- Examined mental health and substance misuse training
