Principal Engineer

Company: WeDo
Apply for the Principal Engineer
Location: Reigate
Job Description:

The Business

Wedo has partnered with one of the world’s leading financial services organisations. Their technology division consists of over 500 engineers building enterprise software used by millions of people globally.

Like many organisations, they’ve invested heavily in AI tooling over the past couple of years.

The difference is they’re now focused on making AI part of how engineering happens every day.

They already have an AI harness, agentic engineering workflows and the foundations in place. Now they’re looking for someone to take ownership of that platform, evolve it and help engineers get the very best from it.

The Role

This isn’t about building AI products.

It isn’t a research role.

And it isn’t a traditional Enterprise Architect position.

This is about building the internal platform that enables hundreds of software engineers to develop software more effectively using AI.

You’ll own the AI harness layer, shaping the architecture, developer experience and engineering tooling that sits behind it. You’ll work closely with Engineering Enablement, Architecture and Product Engineering teams to ensure the platform is scalable, governed and, most importantly, adopted.

Some of your time will be spent designing technical solutions.

Some will be spent building them.

And some will be spent working alongside engineering teams, understanding where friction exists and continuously improving the platform to remove it.

What They’re Looking For

They’re looking for someone who’s genuinely built AI capabilities that other engineers rely on.

That could be within a large enterprise, or equally within an AI-native software company where AI-enabled engineering has been part of the culture from day one.

You’ll likely come from a background such as:

  • Principal Engineer
  • Developer Experience (DevEx)

More important than your job title is your experience.

You’ll have designed and delivered production AI platforms rather than prototypes, with a strong understanding of platform architecture, SDKs, APIs, orchestration, governance and observability.

You’ll have integrated LLMs or AI tooling into real software engineering workflows, improving areas such as code generation, testing, documentation or developer productivity, and you’ll be able to demonstrate measurable outcomes rather than theoretical ideas.

Just as importantly, you’ll understand that even the best platform fails if engineers don’t use it. You’ll have experience influencing technical teams, gathering feedback, improving developer experience and driving adoption through credibility rather than authority.

Why This Role?

This is an opportunity to shape how more than 500 engineers build software in the years ahead.

You’ll inherit an existing foundation rather than starting from scratch, giving you the opportunity to evolve an established AI platform into something engineers genuinely enjoy using.

You’ll work alongside senior engineering leaders who are already investing heavily in engineering enablement, giving you the backing to make meaningful technical change without carrying the responsibility for organisational transformation alone.

If you enjoy building engineering platforms, solving complex technical problems and making other engineers more productive, this is one of the more interesting opportunities currently available in the UK market.
