Principle Engineer -HVDC Control & Protection System Application

Company: GE Vernova
Apply for the Principle Engineer -HVDC Control & Protection System Application
Location: Stafford
Job Description:

Job Summary

The energy transition drives unprecedented growth in demand for and generation of electricity. To accommodate this growth, the capacity of the transmission system is projected to grow three‑fold. High‑voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems will play a key role in connecting remote and offshore renewables, interconnecting energy markets and reinforcing AC grids. Converter stations convert AC to DC and vice versa; the brain of these stations is the control and protection system, ensuring efficient, safe, and reliable operation of power electronic valves and peripheral equipment. GE Vernova’s Grid Systems Integration business line offers control and protection solutions for both voltage‑sourced converter (VSC) and line‑commutated converter (LCC) HVDC valve technologies, enabling advanced transmission planning for utilities, system operators, developers, and industrial clients worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a recognized technical authority in VSC HVDC control & protection algorithms, acting as an advisor to senior leadership and consulting engineers.
  • Lead New Product Introduction (NPI) programmes for VSC HVDC control and protection.
  • Act as technical authority for VSC HVDC NPI developments—approving designs, reviewing execution plans, mentoring new talent.
  • Contribute to and drive internal and external standardization, coordinate working group activities, and represent GE Vernova in IEC/CIGRE and other professional bodies.
  • Support stakeholders in developing and maintaining a strategic HVDC control & protection technology roadmap.
  • Identify areas for technological advancement and recommend programmes to pursue.
  • Participate in the Patent Evaluation Board to protect competitive technology and intellectual property.
  • Oversee R&D programmes from conception to industrialisation, integrating new technology into production and ensuring successful delivery.
  • Chair and act as technical authority in technology and product development gate reviews.
  • Collaborate across GE Vernova businesses (Power Conversion Systems, Grid Automation, Power Technology) to promote technology synergies.
  • Lead or support project teams addressing project challenges in focused technical areas.
  • Support technical tendering and delivery of new solutions.
  • Provide technical consultation on product problems, supplier support, and perform technical rescues.
  • Mentor and coach high‑potential engineering talent.
