Role Overview
The Senior Mechanical Handling Engineer will join the Major Infrastructure Projects (MIP) team in Plymouth, supporting the 14Dock Readiness programme at Devonport Dockyard.
Key details: 12‑month contract, hybrid working pattern of 35 hours per week, pay rate £63–£70 per hour inside IR35, and SC clearance eligibility required.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver mechanical handling and defuel tooling activities to scope, quality, schedule and cost.
- Manage technical aspects of defuel tooling work packages, updating documentation from detailed design to as‑built status.
- Ensure effective Quality Management Arrangements and compliance with the company Business Management System and Technical Manual.
- Document processes and activities, maintaining records with appropriate configuration and quality controls.
- Communicate and manage risk assessments, ensuring staff and contractors are aware of hazards and risks associated with the work.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
- Preferably working toward Chartered Engineer status and member of a relevant professional institute.
- Experience designing mechanical handling systems and lifting equipment, preferably in a nuclear context.
- Experience in design justification and technical design development.
- Sound understanding of engineering design, safety practice, and project requirements.
- Knowledge of company and departmental procedures relating to Design, Health & Safety, and Quality requirements.
- Working knowledge of relevant engineering computer applications.
