Job Description:

Morson is partnering with the UK’s leading defence manufacturer and is seeking a Principal Quality Engineer to join their team based in Barrow‑in‑Furness.

Role Overview

This role is pivotal within the Quality function, ensuring compliance and continuous improvement across the Business Unit.

  • Support the Quality team in maintaining compliance with the local Quality Business Management System.
  • Effectively manage assigned tasks, deliver results, and escalate issues appropriately.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior colleagues.
  • Perform specialist Quality activities in accordance with relevant processes and procedures.
  • Key focus areas include: Quality Assurance, Supplier Quality Assurance, Supplier Improvements, Quality Enhancements, Quality Engineering, Quality Reporting, Quality Systems, Quality Records, Strategic Manufacturing, Field Engineering, Receipt Inspection, and Site Redevelopment Programmes.

Core Responsibilities

  • Actively contribute as a committed member of the Quality team.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) and responsible business practises.
  • Access, interpret, and develop local Management System documentation, including policies, procedures, workmanship standards, risk assessments, and relevant processes.
  • Support the resolution of non‑conformances and corrective actions in collaboration with key stakeholders and process owners.
  • Lead and conduct thorough Quality investigations.
  • Analyse data to identify trends and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Participate in working groups to ensure deliverables are met and that Learning from Experience (LfE) is captured and applied.
  • Take ownership of assigned scopes of work, driving them to completion.
  • Utilise company computer systems and software proficiently and appropriately.
  • Communicate Quality objectives clearly and effectively.
  • Support departmental reviews and engage with customers as required.
  • Prepare accurate, clear, and targeted written reports and presentations.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to support successful delivery of results.

Knowledge

  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 and EN9100 standards.
  • Understanding of Business Management Systems, Operational Frameworks, and Operational Assurance processes.
  • Awareness of product safety requirements.
  • Appreciation of the importance of cross‑functional collaboration.
  • Knowledge of export control regulations, such as International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), where applicable.

Skills

  • Ability to interpret specifications, procedures, and contract requirements accurately.
  • Experience with Root Cause Analysis (RCA) techniques, including Fishbone diagrams, 5 Whys, relationship diagrams, Six Sigma, and cross‑functional evidence gathering and analysis.
  • Competence in managing and verifying corrective actions effectively.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, including clear and professional communication with customers.

Qualifications

  • HNC, degree in a relevant technical discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Professional quality qualifications, such as lead auditor status, or equivalent experience.
