Overview

Seward Lodge ward is a mental health unit for older people, similar in function to Wren ward at Kingfisher Court. Wren ward admitted 113 patients and transferred 5 in during Sep 2024–Aug 2025, discharged 85 patients and transferred 33 out. A similar patient mix is expected at Seward Lodge. Most admissions are under the Mental Health Act. The post holder will have a dedicated office on the ward and a dedicated medical secretary, be supported by trainee doctors, and participate in the on-call consultant rota and Mental Health Act assessments.

Main duties

  • Provide clinical care, RC responsibility and treatment for patients in Seward Lodge, including clinical supervision for resident doctors.
  • Ensure junior medical staff operate within the parameters of the New Deal and Working Time Directive.
  • Undertake the administrative duties associated with patient care and record clinical activity accurately, submitting promptly to the Information Department.
  • Participate in service and business planning for the locality and the wider mental health service as appropriate.
  • Manage, appraise and give professional supervision to junior medical staff in line with the Trusts’ policies; include assessment of competences under the Modernising Medical Careers framework.
  • Participate in annual consultant appraisal.
  • Attend and participate in the Trust’s academic programme, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD programme.
  • Maintain GMC registration, Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval, and abide by professional codes of conduct.
  • Participate in annual job plan reviews with the clinical manager, accounting for changes in service configuration and delivery.

Qualifications

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification; higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management is desirable.
  • MRCPsych. Included on the GMC Specialist Register in Old Age Psychiatry OR within six months of eligibility.
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice at the time of appointment; CCT in Psychiatry or inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in psychiatry OR within six months of achieving CCT/CESR at appointment.

Desirable criteria

  • Good standing with the GMC; Section 12/Approved Clinician approval where applicable.
  • Experience of the full range of clinical responsibilities for a consultant in old age psychiatry; experience collaborating with social care and other agencies; experience with service users with complex needs in old age psychiatry.
  • Excellent clinical skills with a bio-psycho-social approach; strong oral and written communication; ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty; evidence-informed decision making with team contribution.
  • Wide range of specialist experience relevant to NHS posts; ability to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching; participation in CPD, research or service evaluation; experience in clinical audits and service improvement.
  • Full driving licence and access to a car (unless exempt by disability); ability to plan and deliver teaching and training; evidence of education, research, audit and service improvement achievements.
  • Previous leadership in audits and oversight of psychotherapy training for psychiatry trainees.
  • UK professional registration is appropriate for the post.
