Location: Birmingham
Job Description:

Background

If admin overload is one of the reasons you are looking for a new role, this practice deserves a serious look. An external agency handles all routine prescriptions, an admin doctor covers labs – meaning results only come back to the treating GP when they are genuinely abnormal – and there is no Docman filing. GPs generate their own self-referral admin and receive around 10 letters per day – exceptionally light for a Birmingham-based Practice. Add a well-structured duty model that the GPs actually look forward to (circa 10 patients/day), a GP Training Practice with three trainers, and a research-active team, and this is a role with real substance behind it.

Location

The practice is based in Sheldon, in the east of Birmingham, close to Birmingham Airport and the A45. Birmingham city centre is approximately 20 minutes away, Solihull around 10 minutes, and Coventry approximately 25 minutes. The practice operates from a single site for this role.

The Practice

  • GP Training Practice with three GP Trainers on site, and medical students joining from August – genuine teaching and development opportunities built into the working week
  • CQC rated “Good”
  • Research-active practice with opportunities to get involved in ongoing programmes
  • Integrated Neighbourhood Team – scope to get involved in complex case management and community-facing work for those who want it
  • Exceptionally low admin model: no routine prescription signing, no lab results unless genuinely abnormal, no Docman filing – one of the lightest admin loads you will find in a practice of this size
  • Excellent staff retention – two GPs have been with the practice for 5 and 10 years respectively – and a newly qualified GP currently in post, reflecting the supportive environment
  • SystmOne

Your Role

  • 4 to 6 sessions per week, with Thursday and Friday as the priority days – flexible on the remaining sessions for the right candidate, with scope to discuss more if wanted
  • 10-minute appointments with 15 patients per session, plus 3 built-in admin slots
  • Maximum one home visit per day
  • Duty doctor model worth noting: the morning is coordination and decision-making rather than a full booked list, with up to 10 urgent patients in the afternoon – the GPs describe it as their most enjoyable day
  • Extended access sessions (6.30pm to 8pm weekdays and Saturday mornings) are available at a PCN hub site for GPs who want additional paid sessions – no obligation
  • Newly qualified GPs considered – the practice is comfortable supporting early-career doctors, including adjusting consultation slot lengths where needed

Salary And Benefits

  • Circa £10,000 per session
  • 6 weeks’ annual leave
  • 10 days’ study leave
  • BMA-aligned contract with BMA sick leave and maternity provision
  • NHS Pension
  • Indemnity
