Overview

The post holder will undertake a structured programme of academic and clinical training leading to professional accreditation as a Clinical Perfusion Scientist.

The trainee will complete the MSc Clinical Perfusion Science programme delivered through the University of Bristol and successfully achieve accreditation with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists.

Working under the direct supervision of appropriately qualified and accredited Clinical Perfusion Scientists, the trainee will progressively develop the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours required to safely participate in the delivery of highly specialised extracorporeal circulation services.

The post holder will contribute to the provision of clinical perfusion and associated services across University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust whilst maintaining patient safety at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, research and service development activities within the department.
  • Learn to assess patients by reviewing medical history, investigations, pathology, diagnosis, planned surgical procedure and relevant risk factors to contribute to safe clinical preparation and decision making.
  • Assemble, prime, de‑air and prepare cardiopulmonary bypass circuits and associated extracorporeal devices.
  • Conduct pre‑use safety checks.
  • Develop competence in the conduct of cardiopulmonary bypass during adult cardiac surgery.
  • Interpret physiological and biochemical parameters including blood pressure, blood flow, blood gases, electrolytes, anticoagulation monitoring, temperature, acid–base balance, haematology results, urine output and relevant clinical trends.
  • Contribute to the safe delivery of highly specialised extracorporeal circulation services under direct supervision and according to departmental competency frameworks, Trust policies, local protocols and professional standards.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Qualified to undertake or currently studying for a MSc in Clinical Perfusion Science (University of Bristol) or equivalent.
  • Commitment to progress through both academic and clinical training programmes.
  • Good understanding of clinical perfusion principles and extracorporeal circulation techniques.
  • Ability to work safely and effectively under supervision.

Compensation

The trainee will be paid Annex 21 Salary of Band 7 pay grade whilst completing the MSc.

Upon completion of the course and all relevant competencies, the successful candidate will progress to Band 8A.
