Job overview

This innovative post seeks to integrate Tier 4 inpatient care and crisis response predominantly in the acute trusts north of the county. The role supports the Tier 4 and crisis elements specifically, with approximately a 60/40 split between the Darwin and Crisis service. The Darwin Centre for Young People accepts referrals from across the region and works in collaboration with the other inpatient consultant.

Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant psychiatric leadership in the development of an effective, evidence‑based crisis and assessment team.
  • Work with multidisciplinary colleagues to deliver child‑ and family‑centred psychiatric assessment and treatment to young people in acute crisis and those requiring Tier 4 intervention.
  • Provide crisis input to Hinchingbrooke Hospital and Peterborough City Hospital, including onsite assessments and Mental Health Act assessments.
  • Lead risk formulation, discharge and contingency planning, and ensure care is delivered within legal frameworks and national guidance.
  • Collaborate with team, ward and service managers to maintain robust clinical governance activities (CPD, supervision, audit, service evaluation).
  • Develop relationships with partner organisations to improve crisis care, create admission avoidance pathways and facilitate timely discharges.
  • Train Core, Specialty and GP trainees, and act as Consultant Supervisor.
  • Provide on‑call rota cover (currently 1 in 8) and off‑hour support across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, including 24/7 nurse‑led crisis service.
  • Contribute to teaching and training of STs, CTs, medical students and MDT members.
  • Maintain high‑quality clinical records and support administrative duties associated with patient care.
  • Provide consultation to multi‑agency colleagues and safeguard children and young people.
  • Support department on leave and sickness cover, and offer flexible cross‑cover across Tier 4 services.

Person specification

Education / Qualifications

  • Full GMC registration and licence to practice
  • MRCPsych or equivalent qualification/certification
  • Section 12 approved psychiatrist (or willingness to obtain training)
  • Approved Clinician Status (or willingness to obtain training)

Entry criteria for the grade

  • Specialist Registration in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or CESR or within 6 months of attainment of CCT/ CESR at time of interview.
  • Shall have equivalent experience and competencies recognised by GMC.

Experience

  • Proven experience of good working relationships.
  • Experience of multi‑disciplinary working.
  • Experience training doctors in training.
  • Wide range of specialist and sub‑specialist experiences relevant to this post.
