Role Overview
The Second Chef joins The Spinney kitchen team, working 37.5 hours a week to craft daily meals for service users, staff and visitors, and to support special events such as World Food Day, Christmas and Easter celebrations.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, plan and cook meals to a consistently high standard, taking account of any special requests or dietary requirements within the unit.
- Support the Head Chef for the day‑to‑day running of the kitchen, taking full shift responsibility for the catering operation.
- Maintain good food storage procedures, stock rotation and record keeping in line with established procedures.
- Participate in food costings through effective cost control procedures.
- Prepare and produce foods for conferences and banquets.
- Adhere to the ‘Safer Food Better Business’ standards, Food Hygiene Regulations and other safety procedures at all times.
- Assist the Head Chef by researching and creating new menus that are of high quality and align with healthy eating guidelines.
- Correctly file all paperwork related to the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point system (HACCP) – including fridge temperatures, food temperature logs and cleaning schedules.
- Serve service users, staff and visitors with food and beverage in a professional and courteous manner.
Skills & Qualifications
- 18 years or older.
- GCSE or equivalent English, and City & Guilds 706/1 and 2 (or equivalent).
- Basic Food Preparation and Cooking knowledge (essential).
- Basic Food Hygiene (essential) and Intermediate Food Hygiene (desirable).
- Previous experience in a similar environment, mass service delivery, menu planning, costing, ordering, stock control and budgeting.
- Experience in delivering a service on a mass menu basis.
- Strong organisational and teamwork skills, with ability to guide and train peers.
