Job Title: Transfer Doctor – Retrieve Adult Critical Care Transfer Service

Position: ST5 and above, Specialty Doctors and Specialist Doctors in Intensive Care Medicine / Anaesthesia.

Employer: Bristol NHS Foundation Trust (merged NBT and UHBW as of 1 July 2026). Fixed‑term contract 6 months (flexible 6–12 months). Full time 40 hours per week; part‑time considered.

Location: Two operational bases – Launceston, Cornwall (Peninsula) and Bristol (Severn).

Salary: £67,325 – £115,341 per annum pro rata.

Job overview

An opportunity for ST5+ doctors to work on the South West Adult Critical Care Transfer Team (Retrieve). The service provides a single point of contact for all adult critical care transfer referrals 24/7, coordinated by Duty Consultants.

Main duties

  • Participate in adult critical care transfers alongside Duty Consultants and Transfer Practitioners.
  • Apply intensive care and anaesthesia skills to assess, resuscitate and stabilise critically unwell adults, including advanced airway management.
  • Receive training and progress to autonomous practice under remote supervision.
  • Undergo formal assessment and, upon progression, receive less frequent supervision based on clinical case and duty consultant judgement.

Qualifications and Training

  • Full GMC registration with licence to practice.
  • FFCIM, FRCA or equivalent.
  • CCT in Intensive Care Medicine or Anaesthesia (or equivalent level).
  • Completed transfer training course.
  • Relevant specialist courses (e.g. difficult airways, ultrasound).

Person specification – Knowledge & Experience

  • Independent assessment, resuscitation and stabilisation of critically ill patients at ST5+ level or equivalent.
  • Advanced airway skills to deliver unplanned emergency anaesthesia outside theatre with remote supervision.
  • Experience of critical care transfer and retrieval or pre‑hospital emergency service.
  • Experience of audit, clinical governance processes, and quality improvement projects.

  • Organise and prioritise workload.
  • Work effectively within an MDT.
  • Honesty, reliability, initiative, flexibility.
  • Ability to gain confidence of staff and patients.
  • Willingness to undertake additional clinical duties and cover colleagues on leave.
  • Administrative capability and potential to lead multidisciplinary team.

Additional requirements

  • Strong IT skills on Microsoft Office.
  • English fluency to appropriate standard (assessed at interview).
