Principal Accountability
The Apprentice Quantity Surveyor is accountable for, but not limited to, the following within each project(s):
- Live by, and support others to do likewise, Griffiths’ Safety Rules and reporting requirements.
- Contribute to completing improvement actions with the project team when project(s) are not achieving set gross site margin.
- Contribute to completing improvement actions with the project team when project(s) are not achieving set profit.
- Contribute to the timely production, maintenance, and submission/presentation of financial information each reporting period for allocated project(s)
- Awareness of the process and requirements of supplier and sub‑contractor procurement. Compiling with requests to complete as required
Detailed responsibilities
The Apprentice Quantity Surveyor is responsible for, but not limited to, the following for project(s):
- Actively partake in project Health and Safety initiatives, supporting others to do so.
- Aware of the requirement to, submit close call cards
- Comply with the company handbook.
- Awareness that a contract needs to be in place for project(s) in advance of commencement of works. Awareness of the contract form being used on allocated project(s)
- Awareness that a purchase order needs to be in place for project(s) in advance of commencement of works.
- With support, contribute to the timely submission of applications and receipt of certificates and cash on allocated project(s). Provide reporting information on status of applications/ certificates/ cash as required
- Awareness of project(s) cashflow
- Actively partake in AG annual development review for self.
- Enrolled and actively partaking in the AG Approved Development Scheme (ADS) Training Plan.
- Organises own allocated tasks, whilst working towards being able to organise own allocated workload. Support provided by line manager.
- Awareness of negotiation.
- With support, contribute to the submission of periodic cost information, to also include provision of end cost forecast and end GSM on project(s).
- Awareness of the process and requirements of change management. If required and with support compile notices and evaluation.
- Having an awareness of the importance of record keeping on a construction project(s) and with support ensuring that accurate records of works are being produced and maintained on each project(s).
- Awareness of how Bill of Quantities/Activity Schedules are used on a construction contract.
- Aware that different types of programme used on a project and aware of the need for the contract programme to be submitted in a timely manner for each project(s).
- Awareness of the process and requirements of subcontract management to include timely payment against subcontract. Being supported and assisted by others to comply all requirements.
- Demonstrate leadership skills commensurate with position. Be willing to adapt leadership skills as required.
- Maintain regular contact with client counterpart to benefit company relationship.
- Regular attendance and note items of discussion on commercial items at project client meetings.
- Pre-contract involvement as required for timely submission of pricing works or tenders.
- Seek support to minimise disputes with client and subcontractors on project(s).
- Ensure that all communications are commensurate with position in the business and effective. Ensuring written correspondence is checked / proofread prior to sending (by self, or with support as required).
- Awareness of the process and requirement that contract contracts and sub-contracts provide for the minimum insurance requirement on the project(s).
- Maintain current construction affairs awareness
- Collation and presentation of commercial analysis work as required for management and reporting.
- Any other duties commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility of this post, for which the post holder has the necessary experience and / or training to fulfil.
Required experience, knowledge, qualifications, and training
- Any construction related experience will be taken into consideration, with an awareness of the Civil Engineering sector being advantageous.
- Awareness of relevant construction methodology commensurate with industry experience and utilising the opportunity on ongoing projects to learn new methodologies.
- Membership of a relevant professional body e.g. Student Member.
- Enrolled onto a relevant course and ongoing
- A basic awareness of project management and risk management.
- IT literacy essential, to include use of Microsoft Office applications (specifically Excel and Word).
- CSCS card commensurate with position.
