Overview
Careers Assistants support a wide range of activities across the Careers & Enterprise Service. Assistants may work across events, employer engagement, student communications, research, student voice and project support activities. This role is designed to provide Durham students with flexible paid work opportunities that help develop transferable skills, commercial awareness, confidence and professional experience while contributing to the enhancement of Careers & Enterprise services and student engagement activities.
The Careers Assistant Talent Pool provides Durham students with the opportunity to be considered for a variety of flexible paid roles throughout the academic year and vacation periods. Rather than being recruited for one specific post, successful applicants join a pool of trained student staff who can be matched to projects and activities according to service needs, availability, skills, and interests.

Hours and Opportunities
Opportunities will vary throughout the year depending on project and service requirements. Students can express interest in opportunities relevant to their skills, experience and availability. The opportunities could be a set time period (i.e. a month) or one‑off, so that it is flexible to fit around their studies. Some activities may require evening or occasional weekend work. Under instruction and following appropriate training, projects, areas and responsibilities may include:
Events and Employer Engagement
- Support in‑person, online and hybrid careers activities including fairs, networking events and employer presentations
- Act as a meet‑and‑greet ambassador for employers and visitors
- Assist with event set‑up, registration and clean‑up
- Provide directional and logistical support during events
- Assist with promotion of careers activity on campus
- Seek the views of other students on specified topics and communicate those views accurately
Marketing and Communications
- Photography, videography, basic livestreaming and editing recorded content to a high standard
- Deliver content on time as requested by departments
- Create content for various communication methods (videos, photographs, blogs, etc.), consulting with colleagues before publishing/posting where necessary
Project and Research Support
- Record, check and update data accurately
- Assist with bookings, registrations and communications
Research and Insight
- Work alongside the team to support student feedback and market research activities
- Contribute research skills to the work of the Careers & Enterprise Service
Telephone Assistant
- Record, check and update data accurately based on information received
- Plan and prioritise own work, adhering to agreed deliverables and timeframes and referring any issues with workload or timeframes to line manager
Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be a current, registered Durham University student during the academic year 2026-27
- Have the right to work in the UK
- Be able to complete the required onboarding and training processes
