Overview

This apprenticeship provides a 3‑year blended learning programme, starting 14 September 2026 and ending 15 September 2028, for candidates aiming to become Hospital Pharmacy Technicians. Training takes place at either Ipswich or Colchester Hospitals and culminates in a Certificate of Higher Education in Pharmacy Technician Practice from the University of EastAnglia, along with registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work a 7‑day service, including late shifts, weekends and bank holidays.
  • Attend mandatory study days, complete e‑learning, classroom tutorials, practical sessions and portfolio work.
  • Apply theory to practice in dispensing, stock control, quality control, manufacturing, chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition, clinical trials, ward‑based activities and medicines information.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, ward teams and multidisciplinary staff.
  • Perform accredited checking, medicines management, reconciliation and patient counselling.
  • Maintain accurate records, manage stock rotation and handle loads safely.
  • Work calmly under pressure, prioritise and organise own work to meet deadlines.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of four GCSEs (Grade 9‑4 or A‑C) in Maths, English and a science subject (Chemistry or Biology).
  • NVQ Level2 in Pharmacy Service Skills or equivalent.
  • Evidence of research into the apprenticeship programme and the role of a Pharmacy Technician.
  • Commitment to attendance at mandatory study days and self‑study.
  • Demonstrated understanding of NHS Trust values and behaviours.
  • Strong written, verbal and listening communication skills.
