About the Role

Assistant Mechanical Technologist in the Radiotherapy Physics team, working in a dedicated mechanical workshop at Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (Wonford). The role involves supporting departments across the Trust, specialising in the production of bespoke test equipment and patient‑specific devices.

Responsibilities

Support departments across the Trust, specialising in the production of bespoke test equipment and patient‑specific devices within the mechanical workshop facility. The role requires numeracy and computer literacy and will involve full‑time support to the Radiotherapy Physics team.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the entry requirements for the college course at Torbay or Exeter College: a minimum of four GCSEs (Grade 4/C) including Maths, Science and English. Alternative qualifications may be accepted subject to the admissions process.

Training and Development

You will undertake a fully funded, accredited college course to bolster your mechanical engineering skills, alongside in‑house training. Upon successful completion of the core three‑year apprenticeship, there will be an opportunity to undertake a further one‑year consolidation/top‑up training period, subject to final organisational approval. Following completion of your training, you will be qualified and working to the level set out in the attached job description, and you will then be eligible to apply for permanent roles and undertake professional registration as a Registered Clinical Technologist (RCT).

Salary & Working Pattern

Salary will be paid at Agenda for Change Band 5 Annex 21, with a current starting salary of £25,377, based on 37.5 hours per week, rising in Years 2 and 3. Working pattern: 37.5 hpw.

Interview date: Monday 27 July 2026. Candidates shortlisted must be available in person all day for interview. This is a fixed‑term contract until 31 August 2029. For current NHS employees this post could be a secondment opportunity.
