Overview

AAA Screening is a fast‑paced environment where the team performs more than 8,000 ultrasound scans per year. The role involves conducting abdominal ultrasound scans as part of the National Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programme (NAAASP), traveling independently to the Royal Stoke Hospital base and community clinics throughout South Cheshire, North Staffordshire and South Staffordshire.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct abdominal ultrasound scans using the ultrasound machine and optimise images according to national and local SOPs.
  • Travel independently to and from the base and clinic venues, using a car with business insurance.
  • Explain the screening test and its implications to men attending community AAA screening and surveillance clinics, reassuring them throughout the process.
  • Work autonomously, making judgments based on experience and training, with support available for more complex situations.
  • Maintain a patient‑focused approach and ensure high standards of care and safety.

Qualifications & Training

  • Health Screening Diploma (HSD) qualification, or willingness to complete the HSD during the training period.
  • Experience or specialist training in abdominal ultrasound scanning is preferred.
  • Highly developed physical and manual skills, with strong hand‑eye and sensory coordination.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain medical information clearly to patients.
  • Self‑motivated, team‑oriented, and able to work independently.

Working Conditions

Hire will be at Band3 during the training period, progressing to Band4 upon successful completion of the Health Screening Diploma.
